Best place in Texas to own hunting property

The wife and I will be retiring soon , about 3 more years. Her job/career have taken us all over the west and we would like to retire in Texas which is home to me. Since she was an Army brat she doesn't care were we go.

Since I've been away from Texas so long I don't really know the best area to retire to that would provide us with low to medium priced acreage, (around 100) close to a city with a good ,quality hospital,.

I want to be able to hunt on the land and if there isnt a stock pond on it with fish then I want to be able to build one.

So where's the best area in your opinion ?

If I were going to buy land for hunting, fishing I would look up in the Panhandle around the Red River. Beautiful Country and reasonably priced with great deer. Also convient to hunt Colorado, New Mexico , Oklahoma and Kansas.

My bias may be showing through, but I would look just south of San Antonio. Look in the Jourdanton, Pleasanton, Lytle areas, over to Castroville, or even Hondo. Close to a major metro area, several military bases, loads of hospitals, prices still reasonable.

I am kinda with this guy. I am not old enough to retire. BUT, I live just south of SA now. have lived there for 10 years so far. I dont hate it. (lived in lytle, and von ormy) now live more towards elmendorf. just go farther than I am right now.

have family in lytle/somerset/pleasanton and a few good freinds in floresville.

I will be moving a bit further out of the city sometime in the future (south).

Our family ranch is in lytle, and last year we took 6 deer between me and the family and a bunch of hogs. My wifes uncle in pleasanton has bucks in has back yard all the time right next to the little air port... Plus if you are a high fenced ranch hunter you are close to tilden/three rivers!

              South of Junction, Tx.
Anything that backs up to the low fence portions of Y.O. Ranch, Rio Bonito Ranch.

I would vote panhandle also - little to no humidity - actually get a winter - look in the wheeler area - big deer - good bird hunting in the area - not far from lake meredith or Amarillo - when I retire - 30-40 years if I stay in Texas it will be the panhandle for me.

it would be the Big Bend/Davis Mtns. area for me. Alpine is a cool little town.....on the expensive side but nice. anything in Central or South Texas is too crowded now (i currently live in this mess) and will be way too crowded within the next decade or so.

My second choice would be the San Angelo area, just on the edge of the Edwards Plateau. Lots of big acre ranches out there with little to no urban sprawl...lots of deer, lakes and rivers for fishing, etc.

this has me thinking as well...

being from michigan I miss the snow/winter time... just maybe not so much of it for 9 months of the year.

Bourne would be a nice place. Plenty of deer, with exotics mixed in. If I was looking for purely whitetail property, I would check Atascosa County just S of SA. South Texas Deer, but close to a major city.

Man if I had my choice, I'd pick somewhere in northeast Texas. I don't care too much for all the cactus, mesquites, and rattlers yall have down south. I would pick somewhere from Sherman/Denison east to Mt. Pleasant or Paris. Or maybe further south like Tyler or Longview. East Texas jokes aside, there are some beautiful hardwood and pine forests out there, and relatively cheap land if you're willing to look around.

There is no place like the Texas Hill Country. Loaded with game animals, exotics, rivers/lakes, and close to San Antonio and Austin.

There's no such thing as low priced acreage anymore, especially if it has good hunting. I live in Erath county, nice places and good hunting. The hill country around Burnet, Fredricksburg and Lano is beautiful with great hunting.
