    question for the brain trust

I was sitting on my patio this morning letting my dogs outside as usual, when out of the back corner of my yard I see a pitbull with a hog collar on. I yell at my dogs who both together weigh 9Ibs to get in the house. I went back out and the dog is running back and fourth where the deer usually are walking he is smelling their scent and getting very excited. I thn hear a voice and see a guy walking the creek at the back of my yard, so I watch him for a minute to see what he is going to do. Then he walks up into my backyard and the dog is still runnng loose and trailing something. I yelled at him and asked what he was doing, he turned and started to walk back towards the creek, so I asked again what are you doing and why are you back here in the middle of a subdivision with a hog dog. He finally got the dog on a rope and came to talk to me.

He explained to me that the neighbors on the street behind me had asked him to come out and trap the hogs. I tld him that would be fine but why is he out with a pit who apprears to be running loose and on the trail of deer not hogs.

His explaination was that he had let the dog loose to see if he could trail the hogs that had been at the feeder. I told him that I would appreciate it if he would not let the dog run loose in the neighborhood because their are kids who live next door and small dogS'. I did get his name and number and will be asking the neighbor who is on the commity so he can followup on it.
Do you think I was wrong for asking or is he wrong for doing this in a neighborhood?

    Thanks

I think you were totally in the right - you did the right thing by following up on this situation and may have prevented a future dangerous situation

Nope, I would approach the community and ask who let them run a dog to find hogs, and whether or not it was put up for vote within the community, if it was put up for vote and passed, then the community should have sent out somthing notifying everyone of their intentions.

I don't think you were wrong in the least bit! In fact I'll give you BIG kudos for taking the time to ask.

I am sure that there is a leash law in the area since it sounds like a subdivision. I don't like animals running loose in a subdivision no matter what they are. However, it sounds like his intentions were good since he was willing to provide his name and number, if they are correct.

Lock up your dogs and kids. There's a deadly, vicious, crazed, landshark pitbull on the loose!!! I would have questioned him too but to think your neighborhoods kids and or dogs aren't safe because it's a pit is silly.

Hey Cuz, no offense, but it is not silly to be concerned about small children or pets, since it wasn't his pit, he didn't know whether it was safe or not. Pits are known for their strength and tenacity and they like other larger breeds can be very dangerous. And I realize that it matters how they have been treated and trained but it is still wise to be on the safe side. Too many people misuse pits and they have gotten a very bad reputation so people are more aware of the potential danger. Kenforu, you did the right thing. I don't live in a subdivision but I would have wanted to know what was going on also. Everyone, have a blessed day.

The only thing I would have done different is I wouldn't have given him 2 chances if he was trespassing with a loose Pit in my neighborhood. I would have called the law.

But should you just assume that they are safe? He doesn't know the owner, he doesn't know the dog. It is correct all pits are not "bad" dogs....but if you don't know the owner, or the dog...I would err on the side of safety.

And with that said...I would personally do that with any loose dog running on my property. Heck, I had a loose Jack Russell attack my leashed dog (go for the throat) while walking in my neighborhood.

I think his concern was that you have an animal trained to subdue other animals and things happen. No matter how trained an animal is, when he's "in the fight" things can get crazy.

I think you were right to ask questions and if he's doing everything legit and on the up and up, then he won't mind answering questions and putting you at ease. If you didn't want to get directly involved you could always call a LEO and let them question him. Nothing wrong with making sure your neighborhood is safe.

No, it is safety, not silly
