    Whon, TX Coleman County

Does any one hunt this area or know much about it? I am considering to invest in some land around Whon and wanted to make sure it was a good area. This will be for hunting only...and maybe a few head of cattle. I am told it is loaded with deer...not sure of what potential deer size could be. It is approximately 160 acres.

Can anyone help with some info?

    Thanks, Charles

Thanks capt341. How many acres do you hunt? Is it a pretty dense population of deer around there?

Good numbers and some good deer too! I remember a 170'' deer taken several years ago around there.

I have 470 acres. I see deer everytime I go out. The hogs are also getting thick in this area.

I hunted in Santa Anna for 10 years, recently moved to Comanche county. Whon is in a pretty good spot, some hay farmers in the area have cleared thousands of acres at at time so the deer population is broken up in areas, also look into the high fences close to you, the **** mega-ranches in that area totaly kill natural deer movment. That being said, the land owner where I hunted killed typical 8 grossed 161" , 6.5 yrs old, good gene pool in the area.

I hunt on some family land sort of in between whon and santa anna, closer to sa. Tons of deer out in those parts, I guess depending on where your situated. Many of the properties in the area consist of open farmland, but ours has lots of thicket where they hole up. I haver never seen anything huge but this year I killed a typical 8 pt with a kicker that grossed 130. Some years the hogs are overwhelming. My cousin was hunting one of the feeders close to the creek a few years back and claims to have seen 70+ pigs all around his tree stand, said he kept losing count in the high 70's and low 80's (number of pigs). Lots of day hunting set-ups around there also, so watch out for that, every time u go out hunting you will hear the neighbors blasting away all weekend. We have relatively small acreage tracts one being 160 acres the other around 200 acres. All that said, I have truly enjoyed hunting this area bc there is almost always a deer to watch and a pig to shoot.
