we were spoiled growing up and got to hunt in one of south texas best ranches has to offer the dallas cowboys were some of the guys that would come out and hunt but my dad never really cared for age score the only rule i can remember was eight or better and even then the old man would always say you cant eat the horns. well now he is gone and i still live by those rules. i am thier to enjoy my boys and have fun with them.to live the moment just i case i dont have another opertunity to watch that sum come up over the mesquite trees and here the first sound of birds sing. oh and i forgot to say we were very poor and did not pay for this property for lease we were always invited back.

Love it....The reason I am leaving the lease I am on now is because of the straw boss is always standing at camp when you get back just waiting to jump on you and criticizes your deer. This guy will find something bad to say about every deer. Every deer I have shot on this lease has been an incredible thrill until the moment I got back to camp then I get the fifth degree. I don’t shoot young deer, last year I shot a 5 year old ten point and he raked me over the coals about why I did not wait for an older deer. And this was in mid December, it was the biggest deer I had seen all year and it was bigger than anything I had shot before. I have to get off this lease before my son starts getting turn off hunting by this A-hole. Make sure you congratulate the people on your lease when they bring their deer back to camp, no matter what you think it is a trophy to them.

If you like it and it's legal, shoot it, it's a trophy.

I think in most cases it is a natural progression for a hunter to raise his standards in the animals he chooses to take. I'm a big fan of that natural process. That has been eliminated for many to some extent by regulations.

I have higher standards now but it's been based upon my experiences. I hate to see new hunters feeling like that if they do not kill a 125 inch buck they have failed. Focus on the fun and not the inches should be the goal.

The happiest part of my hunt is the sizzle of the skillet!

For the most part big bucks and big bass are safe from me because I won't dance with the crowd chasing them, life is too short.

This is a great thread. I have read every post and wish I could hunt with every one of you. Thanks for bringing me back to reality. Sometimes we forget what's really important:
That is the fact that we actually get to hunt, to be in the woods and enjoy everything that goes with it. The bluejays squawking, the squirrel barking, announcing your arrival to everything in the woods, the geese flying overhead, honking their song as they search for a waterhole to light on for the evening, and of course everything that has already been mentioned. Again, thanks for making me appreciate what truly matters.

                          I agree.

Having to harvest 30 does because the game management program says so, knowing there are guys who hunt hard all year and don't see anything does suck. Heck I don't even like to hunt our high fence.

I get my trophy by putting a smile on someone elses face and introducting them to hunting and the outdoors.

Kids remind us of the true meaning of hunting.

My son Austin was 11 hunting with his bow on our low fence ranch. A cull spike came in at 10 yards. He was sitting on my leg to get high enough to shoot out of the blind and he started shaking badly. I wispered in his ear, "calm down he is not a world record" his reply put me in place, "he is to me Dad" and then he placed a perfect arrow behind the shoulder.

                          That is my best trophy!

                          Great thread.
