As I understand it, most scent sprays function by chemically binding gaseous odor molecules into a solid salt molecule and therefore prevent the airborne gas from carrying scent away from the body. The test in the article compared the ability of scent sprays to kill bacteria or prevent bacterial growth in a petri dish with a food source. This is clearly not an appropriate test of effectiveness if the scent spray's function is not intended to kill bacteria but to alter the chemical state of the odor molecule.

This would be similar to ranking the octane of different gasolines based on its ability to clean grease off tools.

It seems to me that Scentaway and Scent Killer both work to some extent. I've sweated up shirts with both products and the smell is significantly reduced, but not entirely eliminated. Some of the sprays containing silver do claim some bacteria-killing effect, but they didn't win this particular test.
You may be onto something there, but how can you really test the effectiveness of it otherwise?

Very true. I also agree that all things being equal your not getting past a deers nose. So many variables. I think it's the amount of human scent and a deers exposure to human scent that can determine your ability to "get by" the scent alarm.

On my lease we have about 8 wells pads. Workers common on those pads during the week. Deer cross those pads and I'm sure pick up the scent of humans/workers who have been there. Sure to be faint though. If you can cover the majority of your scent deer may not be alarmed.

I really do not know if any of these products work but on the chance they do for me it's a cheap bet. The cost of a few bottles a year compared to all the other cost (gas, food, lease, etc) is not worth analysis.

I CAN say this, I ran out of deodorant one time and all I had handy was my DDW and it worked. Now here is the relevant part. It was in the middle of July and the shirts I wear are black and I sweat profusely. Generally by the end of the day I smell like a goat but on this specific day after using the DDW, remarkably I didn't. I was truly amazed and have been a faithful user ever since. Now I can't speak for the deer but it worked for my application. So if it doesn't work to keep deer from smelling you, it will at least work to keep you from stinking too bad while working.

i've been useing the homemade stuff with soap in it for years. It's worked just as well for me as the storebought stuff. And it's a lot cheaper. I just made up a gallon of it last week for three dollars.

I think White Lightning is worth a try, atleast once, and not the kind you drink! I think you will be surprised.

I used Primos Silver XP on opening day and had deer at 6 yards (up and down wind) with no detection.

The next day is used Scent a Way and got busted by 3 different does at 20 yards, not to mention that I can smoke a cigarette and spray the XP on my hands and not smell it. I cannot do the same with the Scent A Way. I know this is not a laboratory test, but it makes me more confident in the Silver XP.

I have used the Scent Killer Autumn for years. Smells like the ground in the woods. Does it work, I don't know but I'm not real worried about scent. All I'm attempting to do is mask my scent because I don't believe you can eliminate it.

Well.. I use the scent-a-way from wally world and it has produced some pigs for me, I will keep using it and the wind and see if some deer start showing up. I am also going to try the home made version that was in the article.. never hurts

Most of the time they bust us cause of our breath. Hard to mask that

This is the way that I see it. After all of the money that I spend on my hobby, why would I not spend the extra few $ and use scent eliminators and risk them working or not. I'll spend the money, thanks. My 2 cents.
