When is snake mating season?

I was wondering if snakes have a mating season or if they are busy all year.

I walked up on two big copperheads that were tail locked yesterday. They wern't very happy to see me. I had my two young boys and my dog with me so I wasn't happy either. After 3-4 shots from the 40cal, they broke apart and one came straight at me. I am not sure if he was coming at me or just trying to get away, but either way he made it to about a foot away when I finally hit him.

Typically it is the springtime. I don't know if there is a second one or not, they will be hibernating in the next month or so depending on temps. I wouldn't think they would mate before hibernation.
