The word Tapatio originates from Guadalajara, the capital of the state of Jalisco in Mexico. It's literal meaning is "for the natives from this city". It generally is used now to refer to red hot sauce.

It is the name of a resturant that we ate at today. I think we were the only non-natives there.

Depends. It could be a hot sauce or slang for a room of some sorts.

A "tapatío" is a man who hails from the mexican state of Jalisco (of which Guadalajara is the capital). Tapatía is the correct mode for a woman. I would say it's a respectful nickname.
A man from Chiapas is a chiapaneco.
In Central America a man from Costa Rica is called a "tico" and a honduran woman would be a "catracha". "Chapín" for a guatemalan man and "guanaca" for a Salvadoran woman.
Vowels have just one phoneme associated with them instead of two or more as in english so "tapatío" would be pronounced tah-pah-tioh with the emphasis on the last syllable.

Off of my soap box now!

              Impressive honduhunter

When I was in High School we visited Honduras to see Copan and dive Roatan.

Easily one of the best trips of my life.

              I’m glad you’re here.

Definitely the closest to what we experienced today. There were many references to Jalisco in the resturaunt. I was curious because all of the photographs were of banditos and wanted posters. At least I was pronouncing it right.

                  Legdog,
Haven't been to Copán in a couple of years now. They´re always digging new stuff up so it never wears thin.
I have a son who's working in Roatán. I bet if you go again you would be amazed at how much it's changed.
Sorry for hijacking the thread DB!

No problem. I'm learning a lot about places that I doubt I will ever see. Post away.
