If I see it pile up, I wait about 5 minutes. If it runs off, I wait about 10 minutes then go look at the arrow or the site where I hit it. If it all looks good, I usually only wait 30 minutes. I am extremely impatient!

I have only shot one deer with a bow that I had to track, and she was my first 25 years ago. I gave her an hour and we found her 300 yards from the spot I shot her. Every other deer that I have shot has fallen within sight less than 60 yards away. I guess I am just lucky, but if you hit them in the right spot, they don't go very far.

30 to 45 either way. I've had it happen to me when I've seen the animal drop and crawled out of the stand to see the animal has run off. It's always better to give them time to expire rather than rush into it and have them run off. Good Luck!

Seriously, I wait in the stand as long as I can (which isn't long) and leave most of the things I will need in my truck to force me to walk back and get my truck. There I will have a celebratory beer or two and by then I can't take it anymore and drive down and start the search. If I ever have one fall in sight I'll probably need to get stitched up from where I got kicked when I started gutting him.
