reloading for a Remington 5-R mil spec

Just got a 5-R mil spec in a 308 and was wondering if anyone else has one and what work best out of it. Going to try to load some rounds for it this week and just wanted some help to find a good load for it.

You just shooting paper for now? What is your main goal with it? Paper or other?

My Remington 700 Tactical likes 168 grain Berger VLDs over 46 grains of Varget. Varget seems to be the powder it likes best regardless of bullet. I set mine .030 off the lands. Low drag bullet and great performance on game.

My two best bullets out of my LTR 308 are 150gr. Combined Technology and 168gr. Match King. Favorite powders are Varget and BLC2.....there is one other that escapes me. I will have to look in my reloading diary when I get home. I have shot some rediculously small groups with both loads.

Thanks or the info! Varget seems to work well in most of my 308 rifles also.

I like Varget as well - my Rem 5R, Winchester Coyote, and Browning A-bolt micro hunter all shoot both 165 gr Nosler Partitions and 150 Gr Nosler BT's with Varget quite well.

I've also shot quite a bit of IMR 4895 in these rifles with good results.

IMR 4895 is my other powder of choice. It's a stick powder and doesn't meter as well as Varget or BLC2 but I measure each charge for my 308 so it's not a big issue.

Haven't tried 4895. I know mine hates BLC2. Won't hold better than a 2" group with it. Just goes to show how picky rifles can be.

Mines very finicky with BLC2. If I seat bullets to factory length, that load opens up to 3/4". Seat bullet to .020" off lands and they all fall in one hole. My LTR will shoot just about any quality bullet into 3/4" or less. The bug hole groups are just a bonus.

Thanks again for the good info. What kind of brass do you normally use? I mainly use Remington since is cheaper but I just got 2 boxes of lapua brass. Also on case length, how important is it? I had some new brass that I trimmed, loaded and shot but now after I resized them again they are all under the recommended length. Most are measuring different lengths but still under the recommended length. So should I trim them to match?

I shoot Lapua brass in most of my reloads. I think it's the best brass money can buy. They weigh the most consistently and are the most uniform in case length and neck tension. In addition they are very durable. I see regular reports of getting 10 loadings out of them. That being said, unless you are looking for extreme accuracy I can't say that they are any better for general shooting. Case length is not extremely critical again unless you are either looking for ultimate accuracy or if you have a tight chamber with very short leade, which has not been the case with factory Remington barrels that I have seen. I cannot speak for the 5-R.

Ive had the best luck with Reloader 15, CCI bench rest primer and 168 hornady BTHP...Im currently trying to figure out a 175 grain load for my 5R and recently shot 40 of the M118 round which did very well so I'm kinda trying to duplicate that round.
