How to set the tone board on a grunt call.
Since I have been turning grunt calls I have been getting a few PM’s about the reeds and how to set them. Thought I would post up a short how to. All my grunt calls have adjustable tone boards. One call can range from a mature buck to high pitch doe bleats. Let’s run through this.
Here is one of my calls. Looks like one piece of wood, but its not. You will notice 2 “rings” or “beads” on my calls.
Let’s start by grabbing the ring closest to the black hose between your thumb and index finger with your left hand.
Grab the barrel end with your right hand and give a twist and pull, and the call will come apart. Now you can see the tone board and reed. See the little o ring on the tone board? This is how we set the tone we want. Closer to the end on the tone board the higher pitch you will get. This you will just have to play with to find the sound you want.
Here I have pulled out the tone board and wedge. The wedge has a slight taper to it. These go in the call with a friction fit, so from time to time they will slip out. So make sure they are seated tight every now and then.
To re set the tone board, just set the wedge on the tone board and slide them back in the call. Don’t try to overdo it. This can cause the call to crack. You can always put a drop of super glue on the underside of the tone board and on the top side of the wedge to help hold them in place. I don’t do this before shipping then out in case the buyer wants to play around with the sound.
I didn’t take a pic of the reed, but if you look at it you can see the dog-ears on the end. I like the end to hang out past the end on the tone board just a hair. Hope this help, and GOOD LUCK.
