    Lost a breeder buck yesterday

I lost one of my original breeders yesterday after he was gored by another buck. His name was Chester. He was one I raised since he was a 1 yr old. It is amazing how you can get attached to a deer. I have seen this deer every other day for the past 5 years. I am going to have TexasTaxi do a shoulder mount for me.

Here is a photo of him when he was 2 yrs old and another photo from mid-July of this year. It was the last live photo I have of him, but obviously he wasn't finished growing (which he did quite a bit more of). BTW, he was a spike as a 1 yr old, so be careful shooting those spikes.

I scored him 2x last night and he scored 210 and 211. On the hoof I never had him over 195. He had almost 39 inches of mass, 20 inches wide and 22/23+ beams. That put him at 104 down. He had 107 up (57 and 50) for a total of 211. He was a MF 6x6 with 21 scoreable points. His G2/G3 measurements were right at 10" for each tine with the borws right at 6" each.

It sucks to lose a nice one, but as everyone in the business knows, it is gonna happen.

His head is still in my truck. I will try and take a photo later today. I have to mangle the head a fair bit to do a the required brain stem extraction for CWD purposes.

You should be able to make a straight cut from skull base down the neck, then skin as usual in order to access the brain stem- I've done it a few times working with TPWD at check stations.

I actually access the brain stem from the throat area just behind the jawbone. His cape was lost anyway due to the time lapse between time of death and me finding him. We will put a replacement cape on him.

Sorry for the loss. I've had a little experience with pen raised deer and I was surprised at how quickly I developed favorites. Deer do have unique personalities and some are a real joy to watch and be around.

ahh gotcha. I pull brainstems from the throat as well, but there are a lot of hunters that want to mount their deer so we have to be creative in collecting stems. Basically have to cape it first, and then go for the stem.

Any way you slice it, losing a breeder sucks.

                              What a shame.

This isn't one of the deer from the antler mounts, is it?
