    Vehicle Title Help

I'm in possession of a truck that belonged to a good friend who passed away last year. I'm trying to help his family dispose of everything he owned, but there's no title for this truck.

What I need is to find out who its registered to and if there are any liens on it. I tried running a carfax, but it didn't provide any ownership or lien-holder information.

Does anyone know where I can find out that information besides going into the DMV? I'm trying to see if a title can be obtained.

    Thanks

Your local registrar's office would be my first guess, not the DMV.

Yep, call the local tag office with the VIN and make sure who it is registered to and the address on file. You will need to send off for a lost title, get form from tag office. Once you have the title there is a form at the tag office for transfering with a death certificate.

If there is a lien on it, it may have been released, but if he didn't get a new title, it will still show the lien. You will also need a release of lien from the lienholder.

You should be able to get the info you need or a replacement title from Texasonline.com

Do it the right way so the next owner won't have any problems if they decide to sell it.
