    dressing in layers

I know that dressing in layers is key to being comfortable and warm and dry. I am wanting to learn more about what to wear/pack in my pack for my colorado elk hunt in mid october.

I have UnderArmour Cold gear for my base layer...and then I dont have a clue what the next layers should be for optimized comfort.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

under armour, then scent lock then fleece vest or fleece top

and have a t-shirt in the pack just in case -- I carry a couple so I can sweat in them and then shuck them.

you will go from sweating while climbing in the sun, to shivering from sitting in the shade in a matter of minutes.

Have lots of options -- polyprop is one of the more versatile.

What about wool. Does anyone besides me still use wool.

Played golf today in the 30's here in Calgary. I was like the michelin man, I could hardly move! Just kidding, I wore under armor tops and bottoms. Pair of denim texture kakis and good socks. Top in addition to the under armor was long sleeve shirt and a wind shearing top golf sweater. Good gloves, stocking cap and multiple coffees with double shots of "cough syrup" and I was toasty!

Shot a 79 with 5 three putts (after spending over $200 on a stinking putter)!

            fleece, then a shell.
            pack extra wool socks.

Just be prepared for all types of weather. The first time I hunted Colorado (2nd week of Oct), it was lightly drizzling when we were setting up camp. Drizzle turned to sleet. Sleet turned to snow. We woke up the next morning with lots of snow on the ground and got 18" the next few days and temps into the teens. The Rangers came about the 4th day and told us a blizzard was heading our way, and we had to leave or we would be spending the winter there. They were having to airlift some stranded hunters out of Wolf Creek pass area.

The next time we went, same area... SW of Creede, Spar City area, it was hotter than blazes!

                Well done!!
That's too cold for me. Now if I could shoot a 79, I'd probably be willing to play in that weather, too....
or if I had the commitment to play like that, then maybe I could break 80,

                chicken or the egg...

                to the OP,
I really like a fleece vest for hiking in cold weather, it allows me to stay cool enough without exposing yourself too much,
                Good Luck in CO!!

I grew up in the North and we always layered.

Five or six years ago I got a thing called a Web Foot Body Sock. It is the best single piece of undergear I've ever owned. I still layer, but wear much less.

It keeps you warm when it's real cold and doesn't make you sweat when it warms up.

You don't want to put anything like cotton against your skin. You can put the BodySock on first or something like under armor.

You can check it out at the website of Carol Davis Sportswear.

                  Good luck on your hunt.
