Posted September 20, 2010 7:54 PM. The inspiration for Lynyrd Skynyrd's band name passed away in Florida on Monday. Leonard Skinner a basketball coach and gym teacher who inspired the Southern rock band's name passed away in his sleep from Alzheimer's disease.
Skinner first met the band members when they were attending Robert E. Lee high school in Jacksonville, Florida in the late 60s. He had sent the students to the principal's office because their hair was too long, and the students later formed a band named after a variation of his name.
Lynyrd Skynyrd achieved fame in the mid 70's with the hits 'Sweet Home Alabama' and 'Free Bird'
