What to use fishing in the Gulf

I will be heading to Pensacola Florida on the 13th for a week of fishing and a little R&R. I was planning on fishing from the peirs or just from the beach. The problem is the only fishing I have ever done in the ocean is deep water, so I have no idea what to use and how to fish. Any suggestions? Hell, maybe I should just take my bow and find a guide who can take me around the bay.

Shrimp seems to be the best thing when I am in Gulfshores! Nothing spectatular needed to get a little action.

a 4" to 6" top water plug (early & late in the day) & a gold spoon in the middle of the day would be the only two things i would toss.
          have fun!

Thanks guys for the info. I was just planning on tight lineing some shrimp out into the surf, but I'll give the plastics a chance as well.

Last time out we ran out of bait. Nothing was hitting on plastics and we about packed it in. I put a rattle trap on and we were into the specs, for the rest of the day. I couldn't believe it!!

7' medium rod, with a bait caster reel. using 20-lb. line

If you have the means get a guide. Even if you are considering a guide do not wait till the last day. Get the guide early and ask him about the pier or surf fishing. If you are not on the guide thing stop by the local docks or watering holes and ask around. Most fisherman are happy to tell of the big ones they are catching. Good luck!!
