    Raccoon Pelts

My neighbor an older man that was raised in a much simpler time has told me countless stories of how he used to run a trap line and sell green hides. He said at one time raccoons were bringing 20 to 30 dollars but around 15 was the average. I could only imagine what kind of cash he made, to start with 30 dollars then is probably 50 dollars now. He used to run a trap line that consisted of just under 200 traps and in the winter would catch at least 30 marketable animals a night. I only wish I could find a market for all the raccoons I have running around. If I could get just a little over 5 dollars a piece for one I would put out 200 traps and make an easy 5 bucks. It is just crazy to hear stories from a different time.

When I was a kid I would coon hunt with dogs with my dad. We would sell the pelts for 15 or 20, but that was 30 years ago

I used to run over 60 steel traps in Clapp's creek. We got anywhere from $10-20 each. That was 13 or 14 years ago.

All my hobbies costy money! They didn't know how good they had it. My granddad could make as much on coon hides and training bird/coon dogs as he did at his real job. And back then we had quail in East Texas.

The most I have seen anybody get nowdays is $3-$5 for a good pelt. No .22 bullet holes will suffice and they have to be snared.

Why were the hides worth so much back then? I didn't know coon skin caps were ever that popular.

The overseas markets had a high demand for them back them. (China, Russia, Korea)
