    Home A/C

Last night my A/C unit died, tripped the braker and when i flipped it back only warm air out of the vents.
Any idea how much this is going to set me back? I need to have the outside unit replaced. Think it is a 3.5 ton unit.

When that happened to me, the evaporator was also faulty and I ended up having my 12 year old HVAC replaced inside and out. I believe that goes for about $1,300 per ton installed so... $4,500 give or take. Just a guess and it's a big ballpark. But you won't know until you have a pro look at it.

Lot of variable when it comes to this. Yes it may be out and likely. Also keep in mind that new EPA laws are manufactures can not make units in R-22 freon any more so it may be hard to find one, i havent had any luck latley. So it may be that you have to replace the outside unit and the evap coil if you have a gas furnace if you are all electric then you will need to replace both. Unless your inside coil/air handler is newer then you may can add a TXV to the coil and transfer over as long as the installing dealer knows what they are doing. As for price $4500 is a good starting point on a air handler and condenser SIMPLE changeout.

I just had to have mine replaced - same exact thing happened.

When all was said and done, my AC guy found an older model new in the box in a warehouse in Dallas. Only set me back $2050 with install.

For the new EPA-friendly style units...minimum $3500 - probably more if they have to do any form of conversion.

I replaced my inside and outside unit a few months ago. If I remember correctly we went with 4 tons and 14 seer. Turn-Key was around $5,000

We put Trane 3 Ton 14 seer with evap coils for $3600-3800. The 13 are a tad cheaper

Is the outside compresor running? If the outside fan is running, but not the compressor it could be a bad Capacitor on the compressor side. If both fan and compressor are NOT running it could be a bad capacitor or contactor.

What size breaker tripped? Make sure it wasn/t your condensor fan that tripped. Just a thought.

I forgot to add, It was money well spent to have cold air blowing.

I've also notice my unit turns off during the hottest part of the day and keeps the temperature spot on. I've even seen a reduction in my electric bill.

you can still get R-22 units on the internet -- they are still making them in Mexico

somewhere around two grand seems to be the going price installed.

don't forget about the possibility of it being lightning damage, which may be covered by your HO policy

sounds like a compressor to me, but could also be capacitor out....
