    LEO question, under age thiefs

    Sorry long read.

I may be a hard a** but I dont like a thief of any age. A group of neighborhood boys around 12 years old jumped my back fence (4' chainlink). They stole pallets, lumber (for building my future fence), and two 3' x 4' x 1/8 pieces of aluminum diamond plate. To make a bridge across a drainage ditch behind my house.

When my wife pulled up to the house they jumped out of the fence. She waited around by the window and the came sneaking back to the house to get more. She runs out side and they all split but one (who obviously was a follower). She told him to tell the others to never come in the yard again. She figured we would just pick the stuff up. Goes back in the house and waits again. THEY CAME BACK! This time she waited till several jumped in the fence before she went outside. This time she made them pick the stuff up and put it back where it was. Said they were mouthing to her the entire time.

If I would have been home I would not have been as polite as she was. I dont think the police need to be called and I wouldnt beat the kids. I do think the would understand to never do it again after I got done talking to them.

My question, If I would have given chase and caught one of them. Then taken a picture of there face while holding onto the back of their shirt. Would I get in trouble for it, assault of a minor or something like that?

If they are stealing your property then you have a right to protect it. I do not know about taking a picture though. I would just call the Sheriff and let them handle it. If they are stealing at 12 who knows what they will be doing later on in life.

I would of called the police the first time I caught them. Dealing with minors can be a touchy subject.

You need to report it...If they are stealing from you, they are stealing from others. If they have not already, they will work their way up to car break-ins, home break-ins..etc.

If they are under 17, they wont get punished like an adult. But they can be punished. The best advice I can give is to notifiy law enforcement, if only to document the encounter. Because if you do catch them, and if you do take matters into your own hands you will have this incident to fall back on. Kids are notorious for lying to cops and parents when confronted. Ive seen home owners. neighbors..etc accused of mistreating juvenille suspects by the parents of the suspects, because some folks think their kids couldnt possibly have done anything wrong. Protect yourself as well as your property. Im sure you will get all kinds of responses, but thats my advice.

Might want to place a security camera in the back yard, so if they come back(which it sounds like they will) you will have video proof of the incident and they will not be able to say that they did not do it.

Young thieves grow up to be older thieves and crimminals. Report them and you might just save one/all of them from a life in crime.

The only way I would not call the police is if I talked the parents and was pleased with the response and could confirm it was dealt with accordingly. Other wise that is what our taxes are paid for. CAll the law.

Don't touch them. You'll end up in jail and they will end up laughing at you. Call the police.

I doubt that. I don't think the castle doctrine has an age limit on it. if they come to the wrong house at night it could end very badly. I probably would have grabbed them and made them call their parents to come pick them up and I would tell the parents come get them or the police will.

Definitely call the law. I also second putting a game camera up or other surveillance in the backyard. Might also want to have it explained to the parents, that in current conditions they could contract a fatal case of lead poisoning if they continue.

call the cops on them!!! And put up a 110 bare wire along the top of your fence for a while. They wont like the wake up call they get next time they grab the top rail to jump over.

If anyone EVER catches my kid stealing like that, you have my permission to wup his rear.

Bunk mates with Bubba in prison. Makes one wonder what the parents are doing or lack thereof.
