I've been trying to get my dad into bowhunting for years but he has always seemed a bit intimidated by it. Well, I didn't talk him into getting a bow (baby steps here) but I did talk him into getting a crossbow so he can hunt with me this bow season. I'm pretty excited about that. I'm not at all familiar with crossbows so my question is, do crossbow bolts use certain broadheads or does it even matter? Also, what broadhead would y'all recommend for crossbow hunting?

Man I got to. Before someone else does. Might as well use a mechanical and set him up behind high fence. Just Kidding Bro
Now I had one for the wife a few years back. I shot the 100 grn muzzys and they flew alright but I had better flight out of the Magnus without the bleeder blades. Never shot a mechanical so not sure how they would fly but they might do better.

I never trusted that the mechanical's weren't opening on Blaine's (330 fps), so I stuck with fixed.
Muzzy's and a few others I tried planed too much for better than a 6" or so group at 30.... until I tried slick tricks. They cut it down to a 3" group.
In the latest Cabelas Archery Catalog, I noticed that they have crossbow specific Slick's now. I'd jump on those, Johnny.

My 12 year son killed a nice 9 point last year with his x-bow. We used 100 Grain Slick Tricks Magnums. They were a little hard to tune....sporadic flight, but we worked at it and got the job done at 25 yards.
I read somewhere that for x-bows shoot the heaviest broadhead you can find because the weight will stabilize the short bolt better than a lighter broadhead. I just got a pack of 125 grain slick tricks....we will see how they tune.

My recent surgery has pushed me into the crossbow world for this season. The only head I've tried so far are 125 Snuffers. I'm talking about the regular snuffers, not the ss or buzzcuts. They are hitting dang near right with my field tips hit. Put it this way, I can't shoot at the same spot every time without maybe hitting the previous bolt at twenty yards. This is out of an older Horton bow that is a loaner for the season.
Maybe give those a look Johnny, they are flying good for me.

I just got through looking over Cabela's on-line catalog and see their slick tricks but not one with crossbow specifics? What are they called?
I also see this one on Cabela's with great reviews.

Thanks for the info Dale. Basically you can use the same broadheads you use for bow hunting as you can for crossbow hunting? I'm not familiar with crossbow hunting so excuse my ignorance.

I wasn't crazy.... from ST's website:
1 1/8" XBOW TRICK
"THE PERFECT CROSSBOW HEAD FOR ALL CROSSBOWS"
New for 2010, SLICK TRICK introduces the 175gr XBOW TRICK, a dedicated head for crossbows, with the same .035" LUTZ Solingen, Germany blades, unbeatable ALCATRAZ BLACELOCK, and SUPERSTEEL ferrule of its other top performing heads. The 1--gr Magnum TRICK has long been a favorite with crossbows for its flight, strength, penetration and "slug holes", and the XBOW TRICK uses the same Magnum blades in a 100% steel 175 grain head. Instead of those using the 100 Mag along with a brass insert to bump the weight up to 175 grains for the best bolt flight and penetration, now one only needs to use the 175 grain XBOW TRICK to get the deadliest performance possible for great holes, bloodtrails and quick kills. Dealers need only stock XBOW TRICKs to make all their crossbow hunters happy.
175 gr..... nice!
