    MLDP Vs LAMP

Alright guys I am at a point where I need to decide which way to go. Our family property in Walker county is in need of one of the two and cant decide which way to go. The property is 1200 acres. Has a yr round creek, 5 ponds and 2 slews. The property is about 600 +- acres of native timber (oaks, pine etc) and the rest is open pasture. We are running about 60 hd of cows on it but in all honesty they dont even keep the grass in check.

Our deer herd is a lil out of wack and I need to try to get something going to help with it. There are only 4 of us that hunt it and realy there is only 2. The other 2 are my cousin and his friend and they are weekend warriors, you know show up for a weekend run around on wheelers and set up feeders the day before they want to hunt and wonder why they never see anything .
Me and my brother that hunt it both live 4 hours away and its hard for us to get the doe population in check when we may only get up there 3 or mabye 4 times before doe season is over. But we usually get up there 3 or 4 times in December alone.

Just a rough idea of what we have, Last season sitting in one blind that I call the observitory, its in a pasture that is 300 + yds across and is over 400 yds one way and over 1000 yds the other. I counted 37 deer in the field at one time and saw only 4 bucks and only one of them I could be certain was over 4.5. The Buck to doe ratio is OFF. I try to take atleast 2 does a yr from there but I also hunt here close to the house and these folks want me to take 6 to 8 deer a yr also (not enough Tags). Obviously friends and family come into count for this but my Cousin MIGHT kill one deer and his friend might kill 2. I have my sister and wife this yr with guns in hand but they are only there when I am.

Enough rambeling any infor that would point me in a direction would be helpfull. I know for a fact that I need to be able to shoot does throughout the entire season there to be able to take the numbers off that need to be taken. Again I want to do what is best not necessarily what might be the easiest.

It sounds to me like you need to go MLD to extend the time you have to shoot does. LAMPS just gives you the regular season...

Either way you are getting pretty late to permit for this season...

I don't know much about the MLDP but am thinking this may be the way to go if you need to get more numbers of does taken. Lamps will give you so many per acre if I recall with MLDP numbers higher if survey reveals that's what needs to be done.

You definitely need one because if like most counties your doe days are early in the season and you getting most of your time in December can't keep up.

I'm sure some MLD guys will chime in to give you the answer.

Hmmm. pine trees..you can't be too far from me..

CC yeah I dont think I will get anything done this season, Im thinking about next year. Im hopeing to spend alot of time in the fields this year up there and try to get a good tally (survey) of what is seen and what is taken so I can be a little ahead for next year. My other issue is the deer dont hardly come to feeders there. Last season I got pics of the same 4 or 6 deer at each feeder along with a few pigs.

I'm not familiar with LAMPS but you may want to look into ADCP for the first year when you start your management plan while going to MLD. ADCP will allow you to harvest a large number of does (determined by your biologist) to get you started. One drawback of ADCP is it cost around $360/year. A biologist will help you determine your deer density and ratios and get you on the track to MLD, ADCP or LAMPS.

MLD will extend your season and allow you to gun hunt in October, but LAMPS is less work, as far as paperwork and what kind of management program you have in place. If the main thing right now is to reduce the doe population, I would go with LAMPS for a few years and work your way to MLD if you want. Also, on MLD they will issue buck tags which basically means they tell you how many bucks you can kill.

Hey Cullen, get in that jeep high rack and ride around and shoot every doe you see. Seriously, Get with TPWD and tell them your goals and they will help you set up a management plan, which will probably lead to the MLD permit. It will give you 5 months to do your management. You will have to implement some habitat management to satisfy their goals, but they will help you in the long run. Holler at me if you want to visit more about it. It may not be too late to start this year??

GO with the MLDP....extends your season and you can get as serious as you want. we are a level 1 so all we need is doe tags each year. We do our own deer counts and submit them to TX P&W. Once you go to a higher level I believe you have to have a TXPW official come out and do survey's for you? But may want to check me on that one. One tip on shooting does....don't just shoot the old ones...shoot young ones too. Take an even number of age classes if you can. Your older does can still throw 2-3 fawns a year vs. a younger doe won't or can't have 2-3 until they are 2yrs old. Plus you will have a longer breeding season having a diverse age group of does.

Hmm....sounds like you need a to send out a TBH alert...."HEY COME SHOOT SOME PIGS AND DOE ON MY PROPERTY!!!"...that may help.

                    No really I got nothing.

Bodey I will definately pick ur brain here soon. Most likely going with the lamps this year. I talked to a guy at TPWD that wasn't very positive about the MLDP for the property so I called on the LAMPS and the lady said she could get it done as soon as I got the paperwork to her. It would give me 10 to 12 does that we could take anytime during the entire season. It will atleast help us take a few more off and I don't have just kill everyone that I see the 1 or 2 times I get there before thanksgiving.
