I got drawn for the Archery Exotic hunt in December at the Devils River State Natural Are. Has anyone ever hunted there and can you give me any tips on what to expect.

Hunting Devils River State Natural Area

I've hunted the public land around Amistad, and if anything, Devil's River is even more desert-like. You'll be the tallest thing around most likely, so leave your climbing stand at home.
However, as I recall on my first trip to Amistad-I kept telling the guy I was with that there couldn't be any deer around there--nothing for them to eat and no cover--boy was I wrong. I killed a doe one year, and saw the biggest buck I have ever seen with a bow in hand-probably a 170-class buck, but he was on the other side of a canyon, maybe 250 yds away.
Watch for buzz-bugs, and you might just find some nice arrow/spear points too.

When I fished the Devil's a couple of summers ago, we put in at the Natural Area. We saw tons of axis and some aoudad and whitetail on the ranches along the road going in. Once we crossed the cattle guard into the Natural Area, we didn't see many game animals for some reason. Probably just a freak thing that morning. The area had tons of game, and I'd imagine there are plenty of animals along the river.
It is rough and rugged country. Dry, dusty, steep in places, rocky, thorns on EVERYTHING, etc.... It will be real hunting there, I'm sure. I didn't get drawn (again) for that place this year. One of these days, dadgummit!
