    Boykin Spaniels

My fiance and I are in the market for a dog. She's looking for a good house pet and I, of course, want a hunting dog. Does anybody have any experience with this breed? I have only heard good things so far...

    thanks

      yep,
I had one, I'll have another one, even if its just a lapdog.
Bou'ee was awesome on dove, ducks, quail, pheasants and okay on geese. He didnt care for their size.
The Boykins Ive been around had phenominal noses, I dont think we ever lost a bird he went after. We'd come in behind lost birds other dogs couldnt find, hours later, Bou'ee would find um.
Make sure whatever you get is OFA guaranteed and the parents have health certificates.

Boykins are great dogs and for a spaniel they are easy to train. Beware though they are very, very, sarcastic.

No experience with them, but I'm leaning VERY hard on getting one these pups as soon I buy a house.

I've heard nothing but great reports on them. From what I've found, you almost are forced to head East (South Carolina where the breed originated or in the general area) to tap into some of the older "more established" blood lines.

Best of luck, and send a report if you decide to get one.

Great hunting dogs. I believe I read that Jamie Bone has one.

I didnt mention it early, my boykin was an indoor-outdoor dog, he stayed inside at night and bad weather. he did really well indoors. Rode in the truck very well.

there are a lot of breeders in texas and oklahoma, including a couple of the oldest, "cleanest" breeders. one bad thing is, the AKC recently recognized the breed officaly so you'll see higher prices and more puppy mills.
check with the boykin spaniel society www.boykinspanial.org for breeders with tested bloodlines.
Pamela O. Kadlec website, www.boykinspaniel.COM is also a wealth of information.

whatever you do, whatever breed you get make sure the parents are OFA certified and the puppies come with a healther guarantee.

                Boykins

I have had for past 25 years. I currently have 2 with plans to pick up another when oldest - Sadie who is 13 - moves on. Great hunters and cannot be beat for house companions. They are retreiving machines and train very easily. I have used mine for dove, duck, upland and an occaisional goose - which they will basically have to drag in due to size. Spaniels so they are a joy to be with and basically want to please owner. Training approach is repetition and exposure to game and they will use their inheritantly strong hunting drive to do rest. They make you feel like you are a great trainer when, in fact, they already know what to do - you just have to bring it out. Had i litter of pups and offsping are used to hunt everything including quail in So. Texas.

There are some great breeders around though some of the most well known are in S.C. - which is where the breed originated - and Southeast. Feel free to give me a call @ Ray Loyal - 281-808-5071 and I will help.
