Question on Tires/ Mobile home axle

My dad and I just bought a used BBQ pit. The axle is off of an older mobile home, and has 14.5 inch rims, and tires. The tires are shot, and the rims are not the greatest. I measured the distance of the lugs at 3.25" O.C. There are no fenders to affect the clearance. Can I put larger (more common) rims/tires on this axle? I have some FORD rims from a 95 that I had, with what seems to be the same pattern. The other question I have is it looks like the lugs screw into the hub from the out side in (trying to say it does not have posts, just screws).

Has anyone ever encountered this, and if so how did you counter it? All insight will be appreciated.

i have not tried to put different rims on those hubs, but you can go to northern and buy hubs that will fit those axles. mobile home axles don't have normal lugs. they use a wedge and bolt instead of the traditional lug and lugnut. if you are going to pull it around alot i would change the hub out. post back what you do.

Do you have a link to the hubs by chance? Any more info on the wedge/bolt system?

      Thanks

i don't have a link for them anymore. the way the rim is on the wheels it has no center. the bolt goes thru the wedge and it tightens up and holds the rim in place. the bad thing is if the trailer bounces it tends to spin the hub on the rim. if you look up the northern tool website and do a search for the hubs they are on there. they are 6 lug hubs i believe. 600 pound hubs for 6000 pound axles.

I know what you are speaking of now. They are not that type. A little older I beleive. They have a center hub to them.

the rim has a center hub or the axle. i have never seen a mobile home rim with a center hub. most mobile home rims are like Dexter axles. i would pm oneway about those he should be more help to you.

The rim has a hub opening. At first I thought they were old Dodge rims. The ones that were right hand threads on one side, and left hand threads on the other. But they were 14.5 in tires, and were marked for mobile home use only. I may be incorrect, but they look like crap, and I want them off of there bad. Might end up putting a new axle underneath it cheaper.

If they have a regular style hub, and no clearance issues, just slap some more wheels on it and go.

try Husky in Temple off of Berger Road. If you want to stay with the mobile home tires and wheels I have about 7-8 that I will make you a deal on.

We have the pit right down the road from Husky. I may check them out. I will also keep you in mind if you want to get rid of 3 of the wheels and tires for a mobile home. Are they in good shape, and what size? I'll shoot you a PM.
