A buddy of mine just got a new shotgun. If he was to shoot a slug out of it which choke would he need to use?

On my 870 Express slug gun, it originally had a smooth slug barrel marked "Improved". I could barely keep the rifled slugs on an 8"X11" piece of paper at 40 yards, the distance from a hog-killing stand to the feeder at my bro-in-law's lease.
I decided to get a rifled slug barrel ($100 and swapped my smooth barrel), use sabot slugs, and now the holes from 3 shot groups usually touch at 40yds, I have a Tasco RedDot on the 870.
Word of advice...get the biggest, most cushioned buttpad you can find for the slug gun, it will give your shoulder a beating. I have a thick slip-on one that goes over the factory pad, so recoil is now bearable.

Been shoot-n slugs since the late '70s. D-Mo's method, a rifled choke tube, is the least costly and a great way to improve accuracy out to 70 yards. But if all you got is standard choke tube set that comes with most guns, I'd prob use Improved or Modifide.
On todays custom barrels and guns, an "experianced" slug shooter with supperb equipment (including custom scoped barrel with muzzle break, ect.) can expect to shoot 6-8" groups at 200 yards if the load is matched to the gun/barrel. 150 Yard shots are becomming quite common among slug shooters today. Loads don't have to be hyper-velocity to kill, just an accurately placed shot. I am looking at a 20 ga for my next slug gun, reduced recoil and flatter trajectory. Have one 20 smooth bore set up now with Williams open sights and it shoots 2.5" groups at 50 yards with a Modified choke all day long. Have a MossB 835 with full rife brrl I bought back in 1990 that shoots 9" groups at 140 yards. Wish the 835 rifled barrels didn't have the 3.5" chamber so the slug wouldn't have to jump so far before hitting the lands and grooves. Practice, practice, practice, and wear padding while practicing

Don't use a full or extra-full choke tube for slugs!!! You will end up leaving part of you and your shotgun in the field. IC or Mod usually giveS best results. Slugs normally come in packs of 5 and its easy to test several different types to find the one that performs best. And I can say with out a doubt that this slug....
out of this shotgun WILL GET YOUR ATTENTION!....kicks like a mule! I think I would rather shoot my 3.5" turkey loads than those things!! Fun to give to a friend and say "Here, try this."
I have had good luck with the Fiochi slugs out of my M1 with Mod choke. 3" at 75yds. It does hit about 3" below point of aim though.
