when to buy oats for planting?

I will be putting in a food plot of sorts this year.

Question is... when is the best time to BUY the seed? In the past when I was ready to plant in October, the seed was already sold out.

Is there a special kind of oats to use? I know rye grass will grow(on roack it seems).

Dont worry about buying seed oats for planting for deer. You can buy oats all year long they just are not certified "seed".

Like they said you can buy now and they will keep. I will wait due to NO RAIN and way too dry to plant anything, and I dont want to store them and risk getting them wet, mice, and just in my way.

HOPE to plant two weeks before the opener, but the weather will decide if I plant at all. Takes too much time and money to not do it 100% right

I have some sealable 55 gallon plastic barrells to store it in. Guess I will be making some trips to the feed stroe soon.

Holdem, I have heard that before as well. gonna have to try it out.

If they are in bags, look at the date on the bag tag. Make sure you don't get one packaged from 2002 like I did last year.

You can buy the cheap oats but I can tell you that we use the Plot spike oats from TRactor Supply and we see more deer now than ever. There is something about these that the deer love.

I have used Bob oats in the past without much luck, this year I tried the Buck Forage oats and the deer seemed to like it much better. I dont know if there is much of a difference in the actual oats or not though

New Oats seed should be coming to feed stores about right now. You can do feed oats but it doesnt grow as well once it freezes so it depends on your location and how long you want it to last. I tried both one year and the feed oats was yellow and dieing after the first freeze, Seed oats was doing good.

Main reason feed oats might not work is some comes from Canada and its a spring oats. If you can find a feed oats from Texas you may be okay since it will be native here.

You go the feed oat route, just make sure it is whole oats not rolled oats. If you broadcast whole feed oats, you may want to increase the broadcast rate slightly to take into account a lower germination percentage.

In general, we have planted both. The success of oats, regardless of feed oats vs seed oats, depends entirely on the moisture/rain.
