    Old Shotgun shells

Is it safe to shoot old shells? I have some that are at least 10+ years old is it safe and what do I look for if not?

Yes as long as they don't show any signs of being wet, damaged or stored out in the elements they'll be fine.

As with any shells, new or old, if you hear a misfire don't pull the trigger again until you check the barrel....but you probably already knew that...

If they are old plastic shells, as long as you don't see any scaling on the brass or
heavy corrosion, and the primer doesn't have any rust around the ring, they
are probably ok.. if they are paper, I wouldn't shoot them, put them on a shelf..
and save the boxes if they are the older designs..

as long as you dont see scaling/deep corrosion on the brass(not discoloration), powder leaking out, primer loose in the pocket or split in the plastic, its good.

What would be the proper way of disposing bad shells

Find a qualified handloader and talk to him/her.

Cut the hull open and dispose of the shot. Then feel free to throw the brass/primer/wad into your campfire for some fireworks action!

I took a mess of them to American Shooting center and they will dispose of them for ya... When I was very young I found a unused 20ga shell and figured an ax was the best way to see what was inside... hit the brass end and man did that make my ears ring... then the ole man made my arse hurt.... Never did that again....

Just keep a rod to push any stuck wad's out. Just in case it goes pop!

If stored indoors, never wet, no corrosion. I would have no problem shooting them.
