Hey guys, my lady and I came up with what we think could be a great idea for hunters who use dogs, either for bird retrieval or chasing/tracking animals like hog dogs or blood trackers. I've never had it happen to my dog, knock on wood, but I've heard of several folks who have had dogs dehydrate and overheat while hunting early dove season and other seasons. We have come up with an idea for a product that will HELP to keep the dogs cool, hydration would still be an important thing for the hunter to keep in mind, but this product should be a benefit in keeping the dogs cool while waiting for you to do your part. Basically, it is a pad that the dog sits or lays on that would cool him. Would you folks be interested in such a product? Do you think I can market it? At what price point would you lose interest, keeping in mind that the materials alone would run roughly +/- 30 dollars, plus our time to make them? Of course before trying to sell them here, we would become sponsors of the site, something for nothingjust ain't right.

I use to carry these, http://www.bodycooler.com/cooling-pets-mats.htm, biggest problem was the print. Had a lot of interest but few wanted those butt ugly colors. There's another version that gun dog supply carries, but as with everything they carry, it is expensive

Axisbuck, this is something that would be used as a "chair" for your dog while hunting. Basically, you want Fido to sit quietly next to you until you down a bird, then jump up and go get it on command. This would be his "spot" to sit on. Alternatively, for hog dogs and what not, it could be used as bedding in the dog box to cool them prior to and after the chase. Durability will depend on the material chosen and play a part in the final cost, but the product inside is non-toxic, not intended to be eaten, but non-toxic.
K9Trainer, this product is very similar, and I think we can make them at or below those prices, plus, any fabric or print you want, heck, if you have a special fabric you like, buy it, mail it to me and we'll make it for you. I also considered making something like this in a vest shape for the dog to wear, would just have to come up with a pattern to start from. Only problem with the vest is that now the dog is carrying around extra weight, but I think the cooling benefits would outweigh (no pun intended) the extra load he'd be carrying. The biggest thing is that dogs don't sweat, so the vest would be like external sweat glands for the dog, helping him keep cool.
Keep the comments coming guys, I think we may be onto a good thing here....TBH'ers receive a discount of course.

BrandonA, I did come across posiblilty for the hunter. Think bird vest with cooling tubes built in. Since I'm not a taylor, and my lady is not really a seamstress though, I'm thinking I'd have to hire people before I could offer something like that....lots of skill needed for something that complex I think. My mom on the other hand....well she could whip it out in about 20 minutes if she wasn't already working 20 hours a day.
