    emergency dog question

i came outside this morning and found my sons puppy shaking real bad. she is 7 weeks old and her heart was beating real fast. i can not figure out what it might be. my wife is gonna take her to the vet, but i wanted to find out what yall think. i was thinking it could be a snake bite.

I had a dog bitten by a copperhead on the paw and face. She screamed for a while, then went 100% stiff for about 10 minutes. That followed by her being completely limp. As I took her to the vet (30 minute ride) I had to keep my hand over her face to see if she was still breathing. When I got her there, she looked dead. She was about 40-50 pounds when she was bitten.

I know that isn't much help except my dogs symptoms were completely different.

Could be seizures. We would always gives ours a spoonful of grape jelly.

Her paw swelled up from the size of a lemon to the size of a grapefruit. Her face looked like a bloodhound. You couldnt see her eyes. Her face easily doubled in size.

Look all over to see if there is a bite mark. It bled really bad. Look for a sore spot, a hot spot, blood, scab, etc. It looked exactly like you would expect (two fang marks).

She might have had a seizer. Next time put a bag of ice on her head because there brain overheats, feel her head and see if its real hot. Happens to my lab sometime.

What kind of dog is it? My wife recently got a pomeranian and they said something about these dogs have a hard time regulating their suger or something like that and they needed to have food available 24 hours a day.

              When was it's last meal?

The grape jelly sounds like a good idea.

With the pup being so young, a trip to the vet is a very good idea.

on any heartworm preventative? i heard from a dog handler and our vet that any collie breed dog does not get along with ivomectrin, and that is the main ingredient in a lot of your common heart worm meds.

the only meds she has been given is a wormer from atwoods. she is ready for her shots now.

If she was shaking and panting real heavy I would venture it was a seizure. Our Chocolate lab has them pretty regular. It is absolutely horrible to watch. She is a great dog, but we won't breed her, because that would not be right. You can put them on some kind of medicine, but once they are on it they have to be on it for the rest of their lives. (and i'm told it ain't cheap)

It is really hard to say. Seizure is a possibility, the concern is why, especially in a young animal. Was the puppy aware, responsive to you, able to walk around normally? Any vomiting or diarrhea? Any interest in food this morning?

she was walking around. she actually made it across the entire yard. she did not eat anything this morning. i did not see vomiting or diarrhea. hopefully my wife can get her checked out this morning.

Definitely the best idea. Sorry I can't be more helpful. It would be easier if I could get my hands on her. Is she back to normal at this time? It could have been a reaction to a bite of some sort (wasp, bee, ant).
