    winter food plot

i hunt in the trinity texas area and i was wondering when i should plant my winter food plot. also what has worked the best and do i really need to get a soil sample. if so where do you take a soil sample to be tested and about how long does it take? thanks for your help in advance tray

a soil sample should be taken to figure how much lime and fertilizer you need. Typically this is done 3 months before planting. The best time to plant in this area is the last weekend in sept. It won't hurt to go ahead with the soil test even though it's getting close. At least you will know which type of fertilizer to apply, and possibly be able to get out some lime.

The only place I know of to take a soil sample is here at Stephen F. Austin state university. Regarding what to plant I'm really biased towards the buck forage oats cause I work daily with Dr. Kroll. However I have used these oats for the past few years on my place and they work great.

There is a kit you can get and send to Tarleton, get it back in about 2 weeks.

You can go by the Montgomery county agricultural extension office on 1484 in Conroe (across from the Lone Star Convention Center) and pick up soil sample bags. There are directions on the bag where to send it to at A&M. I think it cost around $5 for them to test it. The bags should be free.
