Moving from DFW back to central Kentucky sometime before the end of the year. It cost me $6500 to hire a moving company last time but sure saved some headaches with a one year old in tow. For those of you who have moved long distances, is it worth the headache to do it yourself or hire someone. I don't know how much money it will save renting two twenty four foot trucks and hiring movers on both ends to load and unload. Plus I have a 1000 lb. gun safe that I'm not looking forward to moving. What are the cheapest moving companies to go with? Etc.

You may be able to save some bucks by going with a upack type of service.
You can get some quotes here: http://www.upack.com/default.asp?refnum=ABFSERV
I would be tempted to hire some day laborers on each end to do the packing and unpacking.
If you are getting transfered by your employer have them foot the bill for profesional movers.

RELOCATION ALLOWENCE!!! You didn't state if the move was job related but negotiate a moving allowence if it is. Have someone else do it. Across town is one thing, across the country is a pain in the butt.
The moving connexes might be good. You load it, they deliver it to your new home, you unload it. Couple of day laborers on both ends and you are done except for the packing part. I wouldn't want someone packing my belongings any way.

My employer will not pay for the move. It was my decision to leave them the first time to move back to Texas and I am lucky that they are hiring me back. They really don't have to hire me back but are willing to help me out! I took a pay cut to move back to Texas to be closer to family, things didn't work out, and now i'm having to start over with my first employer and another pay cut to go with it. Just trying to research the options from those who have moved. Thanks!

I would be VERY hesitant to hire a bunch of "day laborers" to unpack my stuff and move all of my valuables into my new house. I understand you may have problems with any person moving you, but you probably run a greater risk of future robberies if you show a bunch of transients what you have, and where it is in your house.

You'll save a bunch by packing and unpacking yourself. Hiring laborers to carry boxes to the truck with somebody supervising where the go is one thing, packing valuables another. Call a couple of moving companies near you and have them come out and give an itemized quote. Then you can compare item by item, like do you want to rent trucks one way and drive vs. paying them, etc.
Be REALLY careful with relocation allowances- I moved in 92 and got screwed on taxes, and the laws got a lot worse in 93. I'm not an accountant, but I know you can get a big tax bite.
