I got a crazy idea. I'm looking for round fence posts and rails to make a spilt rail fence in my yard. But having a hard time finding some with the same diameter thoughout (around 5 1/2" to 5 3/4"). I want to drill a 6" hole in the ground,2' deep, and then put a 2' piece of 6" PVC pipe in the hole, like a sleeve, and then set the post in the pipe so I could remove them if I need to. Posts 6' and rails 8'. Cedar would work but they taper. I have found plenty of cedar,up to 10"in diameter for cheap but how would I mill them down so there all the same size around. I guess what I'm looking for is a giant lathe, told you this was a crazy idea. I will cut the holes in the posts and taper the ends of the rails myself. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks for reading,Neil.

I would recommend drilling a hole in bottom center of post to accept a permanently mounted pipe. Let this pipe fit inside a larger diameter pipe concreted into the ground. The post could be easily drilled out with a paddle bit or ship auger. I could see the cedar expanding when wet and breaking all of your pvc if it is a tight enough fit to be a rigid post.
