    Deer Kill Question

This kinda stems from the thread that was started about if you eat or give away the meat from the hogs you kill. My question is the same reguarding deer meat. Do you eat it, give it away, or feed the buzzards and yotes?

I eat it, and love it.

It is unlawful for the waste of game.
I eat it until it's gone and I need the season to open I need some meat in the freezer.

        We eat it all.

If I happen to have unfilled tags I have been known to kill some for others but I have never left a deer to buzzards.

Absolutely and that is in regulation:

          Criminal Penalties and General Law
Criminal Penalties and Civil Value Recovery

Waste of Game: It is an offense (Class C misdemeanor) if a person while hunting kills or wounds a game bird or game animal and intentionally or knowingly fails to make a reasonable effort to retrieve the animal or bird and include it in the person's daily or seasonal bag limit. It is an offense if a person intentionally takes or possesses a game bird, game animal, or fish and intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly, or with criminal negligence, fails to keep the edible portions of the bird, animal, or fish in an edible condition. It is a Class A misdemeanor to fail to retrieve or to keep in an edible condition a whitetail or mule deer, pronghorn antelope, or desert bighorn sheep hunted without landowner consent; from a vehicle, boat, or aircraft; on a public road; at night; or with the aid of a light.

You MUST have landowner permission to track, follow, retrieve and downed game, otherwise, it is trespassing. See below

Retrieval of Game: No person may pursue a wounded wildlife resource across a property line without the consent of landowner of the property where the wildlife resource has fled. Under the trespass provisions of the Penal Code, a person on a property without the permission of the landowner is subject to arrest.

I eat the majority of the deer meat, and give away some to my Dad and my aunt and uncle.

I rarely kill more than 2 deer in a season so we have no problem eating all of it. We use the ground meat and sausage in everyday dishes till' it's gone and save the backstraps for special occasions. I have a neighbor that kills a deer every year but his family doesn't particularly like venison so I get some from him too.

They get shot according to games laws and get eaten.

I'll usually let a kid, a buddy or person that has never shot a deer before kill my fourth deer (doe). My wife and I can't or don't consume more than three a year. When we hunted MLD, it was given to Hunters for the Hungry, food bank or friends that wanted it.

My family eats every bit with the exception of what goes to a few very close friends.

I always give one or two to someone that needs it. my father-inlaw loves deer meat, as he was an avid hunter in his younger days but is unable to hunt anymore, so I make sure he gets some. my father enjoys a little deer sausage every now and then aso.
always check the deer to ensure that it is heathy to eat first, parasites and wolves can make vinison dangerous to eat. another way to know is to check the liver. its good to go if the liver has a good deep red color, and is smooth looking. use your nose. as the old saying goes, if it dosent look right, or smell right, its probably not. I rarely find a bad one, but unfortunatly I have and had to let it lay.

We keep one or two and give the rest away. It would be hard to eat them all when you shoot 30-35 a year.
