    Judgeing Bears...

Does anyone have some info (dvd's,books, etc.) to recommend on judgeing bears?

Would like to learn as much as I can so when I go on my hunt I can make the right choice on a shooter.

    Thanks

The Bear n Down dvd's from Archer's Choice are excellent and the early ones are full of tips on judging.. http://www.archerschoicemedia.com/shop/dvds.html

If everything stays the way it is now, I will be going next May up in Canada.

        Thanks for that link Javi.

If it don't look like you can stuff him in the 55 gallon bait barrel, he's a goodern!

I have heard the barrel method. Would just like a little more info to go on just in case it's a 30g barrel

They are always smaller than they look until they are monsters. I really couldn't tell you the difference in a 300lb bear and a 500lb bear, but can sure tell the difference between one that size and 150lbs. Ears and gait are the easiest ways I look at them, but have never had a barrel to compare against.

Couple of rules of thumb if you are hunting over bait.
If you are in a remote area and the bear that is at your feeder is nervous, it is usually because a bigger on is around.
Big bears know about tree stands, they will come close and watch the tree stand for a few minutes, the last 2 bears I killed we put up a 2nd stand, one bear was behind a tree watching the emtpy stand when I put an arrow in him.
If you have any doubt about size and end up convincing yourself he is a shooter, you are probably wrong.
Big bears act like they are the biggest baddest thing out in them woods
Alberta has lots of bears and you can take 2, BC, Manitobam and Sask have big bears, BC is mostly spot and stalk.
                    Where you going?
I killed a toad in Sask, to this day I don't know what he weighed, but they had a pic in camp of a 540 lb fall bear and mine was bigger and in the spring

The bear in my avatar measured 6' 8" from nose to tail. not sure the weight but it took 3 of us to load him.

taken in Alberta spring season, spot and stalk, no bait allowed

stalking can be tough, so you can't be too picky!
