    Run For a Reason

It is time to start training again. I have signed up for the Houston Marathon for the fourth year.
This year I will be running as a fundraiser for CanCare of Houston.

I am running in memory of my father.

    Q. How does CanCare fulfill their mission to improve the quality of life for cancer
    patients and their families?

    A. CanCare provides one-on-one emotional support to cancer patients and their family members
from a trained volunteer who has survived a similar cancer experience. CanCare volunteers
help people cope with a cancer diagnosis by providing support during treatment and helping
patients and their families move forward with Hope. CanCare was founded in 1990 and now
partners with more than 100 corporations, hospitals and congregations of various faiths.
CanCare is a nonprofit organization providing confidential and free services to anyone dealing
    with cancer.

    Q. How can someone be matched with a CanCare volunteer?

    A. There are several ways to be matched with a CanCare volunteer:
    1. The person seeking a volunteer can call the CanCare office at 713.461.0028.
    2. The person seeking a volunteer can also visit http://cancare.org/look-for-support.asp
on CanCare’s website to fill out a request online.
    3. If you have a friend who is going through the cancer experience and has given
permission, you may call on his or her behalf to begin the matching process.

    Q. Is there any charge for CanCare’s services?

    A. All of CanCare’s services are completely free of charge, and each individual’s information is
    kept strictly confidential.

Anyone else planning on running Houston this year?
Any opinion on the Lottery system?

I jumped on the lotto, I may still sign up for the RfaR option later...
Ive done houston several times, just not in the last 3-4 years.

Houston needed to do something, last year sold out in hours.
Im not a big fan of the lottery, I think houston marathon is worried too much about $$ and not enough about runners.
they could change certain restricted areas of the course and increase the total number of runners.
Chicago mary is a perfect example.

Yea they had to do something, but a lottery sucks.

There are several areas – especially in the first 5-6 miles that get very congested.
If they want to continue to grow I would think they would look at alternate routes that are wider and/or add a fourth start wave to spread things out some.
I just don’t think they want to grow.

The best of luck to you on such a lofty goal. Hopefully you'll get to start within a reasonable distance of the front and ahead of the thundering herd.

I entered yesterday. I will be interested to find out how many people actually register. I figure your odds will end up being 90% or better. I think a lot of people are turned off by the price and lotto system.

This will be the 4th year. I think this time I will let the herd pass on by and strole on past them at the end.
