It's about voting, she says it does no good to vote cause the votes are not counted individually. I to believe this but I am dumb enough to keep banging my head against a brick wall cause the "electoral bunch of morons" obviously don't have a clue how I want them to vote for me. I mean really, how can these folks possibly represent the true desire of the people? How can this possibly be considered a true representation of the voting public? Some one pleas use easy to understand language and educate me and her.

It is true that your vote is not counted individually if by that you mean it's added to similar votes from people from other states to arrive at a total. It does however make a difference - whichever candidate wins the popular vote in texas gets all 34 of the state's electoral votes. There is -once again- a movement to change the constitution and do away with the electoral college - and elect the president by nationwide popular vote. This idea may sound good in theory but I think it would be a huge mistake.Last edited by jerp; 07-25-2010, 02:02 PM.

There seems to be alot of confusion regarding our type of Govt. here in the States.....We are a "Republic"...not a democracy, therefore we elect representatives on our behalf, whereas a "democracy" is majority representation. This is why we have an electoral college which is consistant with a "republican" govt. And I agree going to a "popular vote" would be a big mistake!!!

I have never voted a straight ticket. Always had to mix it up and the reasons I would just have to explain on a totally different thread but in short just small town politics really. There is enough wackos on either side of the ticket anyways.
I believe in paying very close attention to the house and senate votes more than the presidential election.

Look at it like this. When Obama beat McCain he did it by winning only 19 states to McCain's 29. McCain also won with the popular vote by almost 3-1 numbers. Your elected officials do not have to vote the way of the majority of their constituents. They were elected to have your best interest at heart and do what they felt was right for the people. Now, if they are smart, they will vote the way of the majority(as most do) and that is why your vote counts. Besides, IMHO it is every citizen's duty to vote. That is what being an American is all about. If you do not vote, then you have no opinion and should just hush yo mouth:-)
