    Cheap Hog Hunting possibly

Hello Guys and Gals out there - i need yalls feed-back if you dont mind. It would be greatly appreciated.

I have recently acquired some land out in Athens, TX - 1 hr southeast of Dallas, that has descent hunting on it - which could definitely be made better with a little effort. It is family land that i've always hunted on, and recently got the opportunity to buy the property at a real good price. It is a 72ac tract. Although it being a great deal, I like a lot of other folks don't really have any business buying anything during these economic times. But the price and opportunity i could not pass up.

All of this being said, i have been considering different ways to generate a little income off the property via cows, leasing the property, cutting hay, etc to help pay the note on it. One of the possible options is letting folks come hog hunt basically like a day hunt operation. However, this would be pretty cheap (i think) compared to most of your day hunt operations. there would be no fancy lodging or guide service etc, but just a place to get away on weekend for father & son bowhunt, or couple buddies wanting to get out and kill a couple hogs for a weeknd. Could the TBH clan give your opinion on something like this or say if you or some you know might be interested in such? I'm thinking have couple feeders set up with night lights and maybe like $100 bucks a day or something? What do yall think? Any advice, suggestions, feed-back on such would be greatly appreciated. Like i said, i would just be doing this during off-season times to help pay for the property. There obviously wouldn't be enough room for spot and stalk hunting or anything like that - just gettn out in the outdoors and waiting on hogs to hopefully come in to the feeder. Obviously i would do my best to make sure folks have a chance at being successful in harvesting a hog or two but it would not be your major operation or anything like that. what do yall think - would there be folks interesed in this?

200 for a weekend is about what you pay every where else. At most day lease if not all, they bring in hogs to keep people coming back.

How are the fences on the place? Can arrowed hogs escape on the neighbors property easily?

I think it would mess up your hunting during regular season.

72 acres is a little small for any kind of commercial hunt operation IMO....

would need to be cheaper then 100 a day. Maybe 50 a day would work. I'm guessing you have a good supply of hogs on your place?

make everyone who enters your property sign a waiver of some sort to cover yourself.

Yep!!! You could hunt 2 people and that's about it. We have 2 places and one is about 80 acres. We can only hunt 2 guys "comfortably" there. Then, you have no lodging. Seems everybody wants that. Why, I don't know!!! Then, you got to have hogs ALL the time. So that means keeping enough corn on the ground to keep them there. Water!!! Wild hogs love the stuff. You need a good mud hole year round, if not several. Most places and most hunters want to start the weekend hunt on a Fri evening. Then end it and head home about noon on Sun. So you would have to be available on Fri afternoons thru the whole weekend. The most I would even consider would be $100 per hunter for the whole weekend, which I think is too much. Then, when the hogs show up everyday of the week at the feeders, EXCEPT for Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, you have to try to explain to your DISGUSTED hunters why they didn't even see a pig. Also, you have to put up with some that would get lost in a Wal-Mart. Then you will have some that wants to hunt all night long, only to have your neighbor call you the next day and tell you he found your "lost souls" way back on his back 40!!!
Did I mention the people who will book a hunt and then never hear from again!! (Hence the reason for NONREFUNDABLE deposit)
A lot of trouble for a couple bucks $$, Just sayin!!
Been there and still doin it (sometimes)

                  JMHO

I would think that you would probably need some kind of insurance and for the amount of hunters you could hunt on it in a month I do not think your "profits" would be worth the headache.

                  Is it all woods?
You mentioned something about leasing for cows/hay which leads me to believe you don't have 100% woods and that could cut your hunter # back to 1.

Good luck whatever you decide to do

You might get two weekend hunts out of it before the pigs wise up.

                    And what Squiggy said.

Hay is the easiest. Once you get the soil right you can get 4 or 5 cuttings a year- you dont have to mess with anyone and only have folk out there on your place when they are cutting and hauling.

Why not make a 3-D course out there?
