How do I cape an Axis head for the .........

Taxidermist? I am going on a hunt this weekend in Uvalde and I have the opportunity to hunt some bruisers that are 33" plus. I want to make sure that I prepare and properly store the head, so that a taxidermist can hook me up. Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks, Snipe

I've never caped an axis but its my understanding that its basically the same as a whitetail.

same as a whitetail. the two toughest areas are always the tear ducts and around the base of the antlers.

Are you wanting to just cape up to the head, or cape completely off the skull?

        Easiest instructions:
Cut a complete circle around each front knee. Cut a complete circle around the body about 8-10 inches behind the shoulders. Peel up to the head and then remove from the rest of the carcass. Take it to your taxidermist. Those are the ONLY cuts you will need to make. And please remember to keep it as cold and dry as possible.

Cape it out from mid body up as far on the neck as you can, cut the head off and let the taxi do the rest.......... HE knows what he needs to do.

Thats what I do. You pay enough for taxidermy I'd rather leave the delicate work to the professionals.

Just cape it up to the first joint in the neck and cut through that joint and take the taxi the whole head and cape. Let them do the facing out, that is delicate work and you for sure don't want to mess that part up.

I found a few "good" videos on utube, a while back, but the best advice is to just to skin it to the head, cut the neck off, keep it as cold and as dry as possible (freezing is best) and then take it to your taxidermist.

Caping out the whole head, is not hard, but it's best learned first hand.
Not something you want to learn from reading about it.

Maybe we can do a demo at Nanza this year. There seems to be a lot of intrest in this.

Don't try and cape the head completely off. Especially if you're not sure what you're doing. Skin it to the neck, keep it cold and take it to your taxidermist and he'll do the rest. There's nothing we hate doing more than spending 2 hours sewing up a cape that someone butchered!!!

I teach anybody who has the initiative to come in and watch. It is much easier to keep a cape cold rather than a head w/ antlers. Those of you that know "Keep", ask him about caping his elk.
