    Scoutguard vs bad battery

I'm bummed but the battery won. New batteries were in place for two weeks in the SG550V that I purchased last August. Opened the case and battery acid was everywhere. They were new Rayovac Ultra Pro batteries.

I took the back off and the plate separating the battery compartment from the electronics was badly corroded on one side. The white powdery acid was all over the electronics board.

I'm sending it back to HCO tomorrow. They quoted me $85.00 for the board but I have a feeling the only thing salvagable is the case.

It may be cheaper and wiser to invest in another camera. I'm leaning toward the Bushnell. I noticed the battery compartment is separated from the electronics.

    Anybody else had this problem?

Eeeek! Two weeks...sounds like bad batteries or something wrong with the camera.

I'm not big on Rayovac. I'd hate to kill a good cam.

I've had my camera 3 years and never had that happen. I would say faulty battery. Sg550 is a great camera and the BTC is on top of my list as well. Both have had isolated issues due to bad luck with some users. Top notch cameras for the money IMO.

I have two. They've both performed flawlessly. I'm almost certain it was the batteries. I'll never use Rayovacs again.

HCO has been good in their response and customer service. The first camera I purchased had a remote problem. They made it good.

This is a good reason to use lithium batteries instead of alkaline. I've had many a device ruined by alkaline batteries.

My new Wildgame SR2 cameras have had the same duracell batteries in them for three weeks with no problems and are still showing a full charge. I average about 160 pictures every four days with it set on 1 minute time delay between pictures. It works well for $59 and some change. Rayovac batteries are not good. I think Energizers are second only to Duracell. Spend the five bucks for a good set of batteries and you will get your money's worth.

Some battery manafactures offer a warranty that if the battery corrodes they will fix or replace whatever the bad battery ruined. I do not know about Rayovac. I would check it out and see what warranty Rayovac has.
