I'm needing to build a feeder pen out of cattle panels/t-post, the hogs have emptied my feeders for the last time! I went to the site about making one, suggested to use 60" cattle panel and cut in 1/2 leaving (2) 28" pieces. Study showed this was the best heighth for deer to jump and keep pigs out. However, I can't find any 60 " panels, only 50". Only horse panels that are 60" and they are $70 each! If I use the 50", it will obviously be a lot lower due to eliminating a full square, unless leave spikes. Where can I find 60" or has anyone used the 50's and it worked well. I've checked the co-op, TSC, McCoys, a couple farm/ranch stores, only 50"! Please help, thanks.

Pigs will a jump 28" panel if they are hungry enough...I have seen it and Mary the Mayor has pigs climbing panels on video. I wouldn't go any less than the 34" hog panels.... and even then I personally bought the 50s and cut off the top 4" and then cut a few deer crossing spots where they could easily cross at 42". It makes for a heckuva "funnel" as they cross in the lower spots and are in the shooting lane broadside when they land.
I have seen some raise the shorter panels 4" off the ground to make them higher but you open yourself up to letting pigs burrow under and for sure let piglets in.
And to answer your question, I haven't seen and 60" panels either.Last edited by Smart; 07-03-2010, 03:44 PM.

The hog panels will work as long as you put enough T post to support them and make sure the corn does not throw outside the fenced area. Deer have no problem jumping either the hog or cattle panels. The best way i have seen to connect the panels to the T post was via hose clamps. Zip ties or wire will eventually rust and break or the pigs will push on the corners enough to stretch the wire and it will eventually break. Learned the hose clamps from Snakelover.

feeder pens
Have used cattle panels and hog panels, both will work, the little bitty pigs can go through cattle panel squares. First pen was with the cheap skinny wire roll fence, didn't work, tore it up good. If you fence a feeder pigs have already been feeding from, they are much more persistent about getting in, might consider cutting off feed a while before penning. Saw an ad for a type of roll wire that was supposed to be good for pens, McCoys carried it. Next one I do, gonna check it out. Durn panels got expensive.D
