just like RV camping is camping or "going out into nature". For some it is and the close most will get. But backpackers and primitive campers think it is no where near as primitive as they would like.
I have seen guys shoot a modern compound with a good sight better than most can shoot an open sight rifle off hand at 100 yards. I consider stick bows and flint locks primitive.
you gotta draw the line somewhere. i also would consider a stick bow more primitive. but in the end, the basic fundamentals are the same. just the technology is better. but its still a string and arrow. no where close to using a gun.

just because most of us that shoot bows practice more than rifle shooters should not have any bearing
yes if you leave off the high tech lights/optical sights, etcetera and shoot with fingers. Otherwise it's pretty "modern"...and when too short of an axle to axle length to where you can't shoot it with fingers it's about close to using a crossbow, but unlike a crossbow you don't have a fixed stock which holds the device at full draw for you and alows solid steady aiming like a rifle and of course most of which also use scopes these days. So I consider a compound to still be in line with "archery" unlike a crossbow, but not AS "primitive" as trad gear. I consider compound users to be bowmen/women. Not crossbow shooters though.
It sounds like they are a bit jealous to me, bowhunters use a lot more skill, tactics and patience to get the animal up close and personal. You have to worry about scent control more as well as noise. And then you still have to make a well placed shot......just my personal opinion.
