yeah a lot of it was unpacked (disliked by customer) and returned, basically brand new sans the original packaging

LMK if you liquidate any of your chest freezers. I can always use an extra critter freezer!

I have both. Use the upright to store processed meat (cuts, sausage, jerky) and the chest stores whole pigs, hides, large roasts, bags of ice, etc...

I had 2 uprights and won't own anything but a chest freezer again........
I put too much meat in them.....Uprights won't handle a lot of weight.....
I have 2 chest freezers in the shop now.......

Chest if you plan on storing large items. Heads, etc. Upright otherwise if just for meats and such.

My main reason for switching to chest when my upright died last year. Because of the shelves, I couldn't possibly get a deer head in the upright. So I got a 15 cu ft chest from Sears. I think it was on sale for about $399. Picked it up and hauled off the old one myself.

                Advice:

                (1) Shop around the holidays (Memorial Day, Father's Day, July 4th, Labor Day, etc.) They are always having sales. This weekend may be the ticket for you.

                (2) I just bought a washing machine last weekend from Lowes. They had free delivery and haul off--much better than from Sears (which charged a pretty high price for that service).

I will tell you, though, the main complaint I have with the chest--It is the perfect height for the wife to stack crap on. Then she will ask me to go out to the garage and get her a pound of meat. And I have to first find a place for all the stuff she has set on the freezer before I can open it.

We have always had the big chest freezers. I am liking what everyone has to say about the up rights, though. We are constantly digging (everything you need is always at the bottom!), so the racks would be nice. And I like the idea of knowing when it's not running more quickly.

                    Good thread!

Genevieve and Reaper, I will be checking out Giant to see if one is near.

Just bought a big upright and it has a lockable door and an alarm, if the temp drops for more than like a minute you will know!

I have a old Montgomery Ward chest freezer, I think my dad bought it in 1976. It has gone out once but had it fixed and still working. Love it.
