The malfunction lock-out. This is where a part of the lock breaks and you can not open it from either side. As most you know, I'm a locksmith and my shop throws all these things at me.
Dead bolts and knob/levers are a piece of cake especially if you have access from the inside. You can remove the lock or drill something and then fix it. My biggest fear is getting a call like this on a Mortise lock. This is what I had to attack Friday.
To repair the lock you have to have the door open to remove it, but you can not remove the lock until the door is open, and it is locked with the deadbolt thrown. Note that it was on a very ornate door that I didn't want to damage on a Million Dollar home. And one of our guys had worked on the lock this year and told the guy it needed to be replaced, but he didn't want to spend the money.....
Well, he spent the money. About $700 for the lock case and my labor and I cut him a break on the labor. I did not damage the door or frame, but the lock did not survive.
In fact when I got it open the set screw assembly that holds the lock cylinder in was stripped and the cylinder has to be removed to get the the old lock out. So out comes the drill again...
Anyway, that was my Friday morning.
