This is sure to age me, but I used to trap and sell flying squirrels back in the 60s when it was "in" for folks to keep them as pets. Made my first $50 selling them (3rd grade). They dont make very good pets at all -- sleep all day and mean as the dickens! Anyway, I would catch them and hold them in cages until I sold one. Had a female give birth to 3 babies on Christmas eve night one year and we raised those as pets. Those were not mean but still preferred to sleep and hide most of the time during daylight. Had a devil of a time catching them when they got loose in the house. They headed straight for the hardest places to get them out -- couch frame, underneath frig, etc.

I used to have two of 'em when I was in college. I got the male, Rocky (I know, I wasn't very creative), first and he was one the coolest pets I have ever owned. He would sit on one shoulder and run from side to side and loved to be held. Then, I got the female. After she came into the picture, neither would let me hold them and they constantly bit me. She had him whooped! I got rid of the female but the damage had already been done...Rocky was already an angry, bitter man hater.

We had a young one growing up in Kentucky . They make good pets if you catch them early.

I've got a few living in one of my box blinds and was wondering how to get them to leave on their own without harming them??

How did ya care for them? What do ya feed the babies?

Saw a few the other day. Gonna make some flying squirrel houses and try and get me one.

Years ago when we leased we had a family make a nest in one of our box blinds. Chewed up a styrofoam seat cushion, made a huge mess. Nonetheless I hunted several times that season with them in the blind with me, and we got along fine. Mom would climb around on the walls and watch me with those giant mousy eyeballs. Would even perch on my foot at times. Couldn't believe how docile she was for being a wild squirrel. Fascinating creatures.

I think we eventually moved the cushion-nest outside and put it in a laydown, and don't know what became of them. Might consider putting a rubber snake or a hawk near/on the stand. Might encourage a relocation.

Had one as a pet years ago It would climb up the drapes to the top, launch, and swoop across the room to another set of drapes. Beautiful critters, and I finally turned my loose in the maple tree in the front yard.
