    Dang mesquite thorns...

Yeah, I know they are bad. Been stuck a lot but it's been a few years. I forgot how nasty they could be.

I'm running a couple of eatin steers with my horses on a coastal field. Had my paint mare (good cow horse) get to messing around Sunday cutting one of the steers and ended up pushing it through a fence into a 5 acre trap full of mesquite, prickly pear, and waist high weeds. I don't have any water in the trap and needed to get him out. I didn't want to leave the gate open because I didn't want the other horses/steer getting in there. My saddle was back in town and so I decided to walk him out.

Anyway, I put on my snake chaps and pushed him out the gate (after a few circle backs and profanity laced tirades) and stuck myself good with a mesquite thorn in the forearm in the process.

I'm in the third day and still in that "achy joint" phase...elbow, wrist, fingers etc. hurt and the swelling is just starting to go down around the stick...amazing what one little thorn stick can do.

Ouch! Man I feel for ya. I got one broke off in the fat part of my thumb one time. Hand looked like a catchers mitt for a day or two. What is it in the thorns that causes all the pain/swelling? Some kind of resin or something?

I had one at least a half inch long break off inside the side of my knee a couple months ago. It locked my knee up for three days, and could barely walk. Lucky for me though, we were building feed pens, so I got to sit in the air conditioned tractor and push T-posts while everyone else did all of the other work.

One thing I don't miss about growing up in West Texas. Had one through my foot one time.
Then again, I do miss the unlimited free cooking wood. Can't believe I actually pay $10 a bag for mesquite down here.

My brother had surgery to remove a broke off one in the knuckle
of his middle finger. Tried anti biotics for 5 weeks before they
          decided to cut him.

Stepped on one in flipflops once. There will not be a second I can promise you. I was unable to walk for a week.

If he would have not taken the antibiotics, it would have festered up and squeezed out like a giant zit...

Got one thru the toe of my boot and it broke off under the nail on my big toe. Our ranch hispanic lady fixed up some kinda poultice and bandaged me up with a piece of meat over the toe..it drew out the thorn overnite and was sore but never feverish....wish I knew what she did to it, it was a miracle cure!!!

There must be some sorta toxin on them suckers because I got poked brushing in a pop up one night and that sucker bled like crazy and hurt for abvout 24 hrs. It sorta spooked the crap outa me. I starting thinking it might have been a snake that got me.

When I was a teenager I caught one right on the inside of my right ring finger on the first joint. The tip broke off. I knew it but I was young and bulletproof. It literally stayed infected/irritated for a year. I still have a calloused scar where it went in. The crazy part is the thorn tip came out of the back side of my finger eight years later about 1-1/2" from where it went in. I had this irritating, painful bump on the back side of my finger and finally took a needle and dug it out.

I got stuck a few months ago while testing fire hydrants at work. It hurt for weeks, but no real swelling to speak of.

It sure messed Jake Spoon up until Deets came and dug it out on the riverbank before the storm came that night.

I was staring at Clara Darlin' that whole seen. She was looking too good to look at mesquite thorns.
