Does anyone know how the hunting in Pecos County is? My wife's family ownes a pretty fair chunk of land there and her father said there is not anything to hunt there. I told him there must be. He said there is just nothing for them to eat so he has never even tried to hunt it.

Pretty tough country but some areas have muledeer and javilina if there are deep canyons with heavy cover set up a feeder near the edge of the canyon and you'll know soon enough if you have anything living there. I hunted that area a few years ago and couldn't find a track on the ground but when the feeder went off several does came out of nowhwere and the javilina came running in. The bucks stayed back but that is normal.
Good Luck and let us know what you see.

Keep, I hunt and guide in Pecos County. I am 45 miles SE of Ft. Stockton. Excellent Mulies and Whitetails. Alot of javis, turkey ect. As far as eating is concerned this year will be one of, if not the best year for game, in Pecos County. Lots of rain as elsewhere in Texas. Pecos County is an arrid dry region, as it is. Feeding year round and a ample water supply, are necessities in this area when there is little to no rain. These deer and Javi are from this past season. Not to bad of deer, IMO. Any questions feel free to ask me.

I know the area. It is near "Horsehead Crossing" on the Pecos River. You should go look at it before putting any money into it. I worked at WTUs Rio Pecos Station at Girvin in the '70s and got to know that country well. It is the sorriest land I have ever seen. It was bad before the oilfields opened up.....now the Pecos River is so polluted with oilfield brine you can't eat the ducks you shoot on it. The soil is naturally alkaline and doesn't support anything but sagebrush.....and it is poor. I was told if you wanted to run cows out there, figure one cow per section. Jackrabbits flourish out there.....I have no idea what they are eating. Rattlesnakes are very bad.....we had big ones come into the power plant.
I'm not trying to paint a bad picture....it's true. If you go SE of Girvin towards Bakersfield, you will get into some good deer hunting....but not from Girvin to Imperial. If you need more info, PM me....glad to help.

May be some deer, but few between. Lots of varmits, for sure. Pecos river doesn't hold much water either, and it is pretty nasty. Just to the imediate south of where you will be at, there is a good population of Mule deer and whitetails. Getting them to where your at, may take some doing. Just directly to your north, is sandhills(Crane County) and mule deer(VERY big mule deer). The feral hogs are coming in strong in this area, and there are numerous Javelinas. I guess the best way to round this off is, there are species of game around. The one area your inquiring about is going to take some work, IMO. I think it's worth a shot, then again I think alot of things are. Best of luck to you and still hope it works out.
