I just had mine serviced after setting for almost four years and here is what a Boat Mechanic friend of mine back home recommended . . .
Boat Tune Up
Ok the main thing to let the mechanic tackle is the water pump .
The lower unit oil , plugs down by the prop , is one thing you can learn to do yourself , but he will have to do it anyway this time to change the water pump .
The rest with your motor is get rid of all old gas .
Do you have an internal gas tank ? If so flush best you can .
I was worried more about your carbuetor if you mixed gas because the oil will not evaporate and clog . With an oil injection your carb could be ok . Still possible drying of gaskets .
Just go ahead and put in new spark plugs .
I don't know much about the oil injection so make sure that is operating and the warning light works . No oil = $2000 in repairs .
That should not be to expensive . Manly pay the guy for the water pump replacement and advise .
Just watch for grease fittings especially where the motor pivots for steering . Use Lucas grease . I"ve bought at auto zone . White case with red letters . The grease is red . Also good for boat trailer bearings .

Water pump(while hooked up to the water hose the motor may **** giving you the impression your water pump is good but out in the water"under load" where it actually has to pick-up water it may not causing your motor to overheat) , Impeller, lower unit oil, Grease steering rod, fresh gas, new fuel lines and separator, bilge pump, jack plate (if hydraulic),spark plugs, etc. Any good mechanic will check or replace these items prior to running the boat out in the lake or bay. Before you take it out be sure and have a buddy with a reliable boat available just in case you need a tow in. Those 88 evinrude motors are pretty darn good so it should'nt take much to get it going and make it a motor you can depend on.

Before you spend any money on the motor make sure the boat itself is in good condition. It would be a bad day to spend a bunch of money on the motor and the transom was rotton. Check the transom and floor. If they are solid, then check the bottom. If there are any scratches or chips that are through the gel coat and the glass is showing then those will need to be fixed.
Then clean the carbs and change the water pump.

Alright guys...thanks for all the help. Cost $200 to get the carbs rebuilt and the water pump impeller replaced. $53 for registration and then another $30 or so for new fuel line and a new primer bulb. So far total is about $350 I think and I got it running. I took the boat out and it ran surprisingly well for the first timeas long as we stayed in more than knee deep water..
....Got out and got it back into some deep water and on we went.
Only thing is that when we went full throttle we got a constant beep sound. While researching it seems that it is either an oil problem or a overheating problem. I am running premix. The guy that worked on the engine said 1 pint per six gallons. I bought 2 pints of oil and 12 gallons of gas. Is this the right ratio for this engine? Could there be something else wrong?
Engine didn't back off by itself or die out. We just cut the throttle by about half and kept running. Eventually the beep would die. Did it twice. What should I check?
I believe the engine is a 1991 but I know it is an 88hp evinrude.

Could be overheating but it sounds like an oil/mix situation to me. Look at the water intake screens and make sure they are clear of obstruction. Grass, sand, mud, etc. Also take a thin wire and run it up into were the motor pees from. There could be a clog in there. Some motors will never overheat or beep if you have them hooked to the water hose but this will happen when the boat is under a load(actually in the water). If it is an oil/mix problem I beieve you can get an oil injection kit for those motors. I am not sure about the mix ratio but some research could alleviate the problem.
