    hot water heater question

Our hotwater heater quit last night and a buddy thinks it might be the thermacouple. I can light the pilot, but as soon as I let go it goes out, even after holding it on for over a minute. He said just replace the thermacouple. Any suggestions from anyone else?

If your water's already hot... why run in through a heater?

Sounds like the thermocouple. It "could" be the regulator but probably is the thermocouple. As it gets hot it will send a few millivolts back to the regulator to tell it you have a pilot light burning and that it's safe to run gas.

Also you may try to take the thermocouple off of the control, clean the end and retighten , sometimes this works also

If it's a whirlpool, it's more than likely the regulator. Biggest pieces of junk on the market. Replace it with a Bradford White or a State.

If this is a newer hot water heater, you wil find a reset button on the side that senses the water temperature. If it sees too hot a temperature it will turn off the gas. You will be abel to light the pilot by holding down the button, but as soon as you let it up, (the button) the pilot light will go out....

If it is a whirlpool there is an 800 number listed on the side of the heater, call them and they will send you a new burner and thermocouple for free. (left handed threads) just went through this last month, and found out that nobody carries a left hand thread thermocouple.

I know this is an old thread but I need to replace my hot water heater. Are these still the "good brands" and if so where can I buy one near Fort Worth? I'm wanting to install the heater myself.
