    Question???

So, here it is and I wanted to get yalls opinion on the matter:

I have a Smith and Wesson 642 airweight for sale, on the classifieds section. I got a pm from a guy saying his friend wanted it. I called the friend and we set everything up. Meeting in Llano, going to exchange money and gun. I tell the guy that he is going to have to sign a bill of sale, stating that he bought the gun from me on so and so date. I ask him that as long as he is not a felon, the sale is legit. He agrees....

15 minutes later, I get a call and the guy says that he has spoken with his wife and he and she do not feel comfortable signing a bill of sale. He says he does not trust the government right now and does not want to sign one. I tell him it is for his safety and mine, and that I would not be turning in anything to the government. I basically told him a bill of sale is a receipt. I further telll him that if he is going to buy a gun at a gun store, they will run his info and it will be sent to the government. He says he knows, he has three guns from there.

Anyway, just wanted to get your thoughts on this situation. Legit, fishy, or just backing out of a deal. What do you think this guy is doing?

    Thanks.

Sounds like pre-buyers remorse, to me, but who knows? Maybe he's got a tinfoil hat.

I think it sounds like a good way to back out without causing hard feelings. I have always found that when someone blames someone else for them not being able to get it that is normally a sign.

sell it to someone else. I don't see why you are requiring a signature. just exchange info.

gun stores/ffl's do NOT turn anything into the govt. The call in for 4473's are not recorded or documented.

I think his wife said, " NO YOU ARE NOT BUYING ANOTHER GUN!"

I wouldn't worry about getting a signature for a bill of sale, Now getting his name/address...in case something ever comes up from it would be better....a bill of sale without a notary seal, (to me) is worthless....

Who sent you the PM- somebody who you know? If you don't know the person who sent you the PM, why wouldn't his friend contact you directly.

                Sounds fishy to me.

I dont much care about the signature, I just want his contact info, in case something did come up, like he went and killed someone with a gun that is registered in my name. I know it might be a little far fetched, but in todays world, you have to look out for number one and that is what I am doing.

                  Anyway, thanks for the responses.

Some people will only buy or sell a firearm with a receipt and some will only buy or sell a firearm without one.

Both are legal in face to face deals.

There are plenty of threads in TBH where people mention guns and it soon turns to, "what guns?" or "I lost mine in a boating accident" or "I sold all of mine last year".

While it is comical, it also has a bit of truth in it. They won't come a knocking if they don't think they are there. Many people that have never even had a traffic citation still do not want a record of a firearms deal.

If both sides don't agree with the conditions, the deal is off. I can see both sides of the issue as being a valid viewpoint however.

The only way that you could be held responsible if he went and killed someone is if he TOLD you he was a felon and you sold it to him anyway. Getting a signature on a piece of paper makes no difference what-so-ever. Some people simply don't like gun sales being recorded. I have no problem with it, others do.

I think the point he is trying to make is if he sold the gun and then the guy shot somebody and tossed the gun, it could be traced back to him. If there wasn't anything in writing then the man is gonna be looking for answers and you better have a good alibi.
