There is a Thompson Center .50 cal in the classified ads right now with a Nikon Scope. Looks like a good deal for $500. Good luck!

TC make the Z5 which is the same barrel specs as the encore pro hunter and triumph. It is cheaper for the initial buy, got mine on sale for less than 300 NEW. You don't need the 3-9x40 the smaller 2-8 or 1.5-5 is perfect for ML's. I really like the blackhorn 209 and Barnes TMZ 250's my dad has the exact same gun and he shoots the same powder but gets better groups with the TC shockwave 250's. practice is the key, the vast majority of trophy bulls and bucks are shot under 100yds, but practice out to 200 and yes it is very effective to that distance if you are comfortable with it. just like your bow practice father out so the close shots are easier. If you can find a place that will allow you to shoot angels it is a good idea as there is some terrain in 15 that is steep and it may require a up or down hill shot. Oh and get to working out you will be at a high elevation and Cardio is key

A few years ago I was were you are now.The whole "I'm gonna blow up"factor is strong when you first start.

What we did was start with some cheap muzzleloaders that were no more than barrels on stocks. After we got more proficient we bought better muzzy. If this is something you really want to keep doing I would buy a good solid gun from a Gunbroker.com.There are alot of guns to choose from and some absolute steals on there if you look.

I would stay away from CVA because of their testing issues even though you can get their guns pretty cheap.Stay away from bolt actions because they are much harder to clean.Break action guns are easy to use and easy to clean. For the money the Tradition Pursuit pro is an ideal gun to get started with.Cabelas puts the package on sale all the time.Scoped gun for about $250.

Another thing is try different loads.Start low and work your way up.I still use 100gr triple X pellets with a 240gr projectile as my max load.I found you can kill anything in North America with this.

          Hope I helped.

Hold on tight if you load 150 grains of powder. It kicks like a mule. At least my T/C does.

We found out that 110 grains with a 340 grain bullet worked a lot better than the 150 grains of powder and the 250 grain bullets, if you have the time to clean bore after about 3 shots do it, there is a lot of info on the web, check it out and by all means shoot as much as you can.

Take a hard lookk at the Disc Extreme series by Kniht. They arent cheap, they arent on every other TV shoow, but they are tack drivers. I have hunted and killed in New Zealand, Australia, Colorado, and Texas with mine and going to add Wyoming to the ist this year.

Dot mess with the pre-formed pellets. Use loose triple 7 so that you can tune the load to your gun. MIne gets the best groups wiith 120 grains of Triple 7. Look at the Barnes TMS series of muzzleloader bullets. I have pole-axed stags, elk. fallow, mule deer, and pronghorn with mine.
