    Surf and jetty fishing question????

I'll start with saying I have never done this kind of fishing and I know nothing about it, but I want to do it. Looking at taking my camper and going soon. Any tips, advice, anything on this will be much appreciated. I have no tackle or clue what bait, where to fish, rods, reels, lures, nothing. so any info on how, when, where, and waht I need will be greatly appreciated.

    Galveston Jettys or Freeport Jettys?

We are goin to Quintana Beach County RV Park this weekend. Its on the West side across from Surfside. Jettys are easily accessable and I heard they were pullin 30"+ Reds in off the surf.

Im not a fisherman, so I cant help with tackle.
    Ultramatic Feeders

We're paratroopers, Lieutenant. We're supposed to be surrounded......

When and where are you planning on going?
Tackle and bait are a matter of personal preferance. I am sure there will be a lot feedback on that.

Without buying tons of new gear, some conventional bass rods/reels/techniques would be all you need to catch some fish from the surf or jetties. That gear will land most of the fish you encounter from either of these places. The best all around bait is probably live or fresh dead shrimp. If you are on the jetties, you can freeline it or set it deep under a bobber or popping cork. Other productive baits would be mullet (cast net in surf or channel) or Fishbites (pink works well). For lures, the best bet is a silver spoon. You can also use Rat-L-Traps or “walk-the-dog” type topwaters early in the morning. Soft plastics can work really well, using a jig head and bouncing shrimp or minnow imitations along the bottom. You mentioned Port A, those jetties (take the jetty boat to the north side to avoid the crowd) and the Packery Channel can be very productive. Be careful fishing the jetties, they can get really slick, and they eat tackle like nobody’s business.

What Moose said above pretty much covers it. Ive caught 4.5' sharks on bass rigs with 17# line, just dont set your drag too tight. San Luis Pass has good fishing and is a little closer to you. There is a pretty nice rv park just over the bridge. Im heading down for a few days next month. Good luck.

Port a jettys. 15 lb test or bigger. For bait... Bait shrimp, squid, mullet, cut bait, etc... I like squid. Cast waaay out into the channel with a big sand weight or us a cork and retrieve it before the rocks suck it up.

If trying to catch a small shark or two is your thing, then get set up with a sand weight, or spider weight as I call it, wire leader with multiple hooks, and a good striper/bass fishing rod. I use squid or mullet usuallly. Wade out in the surf as far as you can and cast out there a good ways, make sure your sand weight is anchored on the bottom good...freespool the line as you make your way back to the beach and put your rod in a rod holder, grab a cold one and wait. I have caught plenty of small sharks this way. If you have a kiyak you can get your bait out there quite a bit further and have a chance at bigger sharks I am sure. Just my $.02

                Good luck!!!
